Recommendations for scanning images into Banner BXS

By varying the settings on the scanner, including the driver used, the size of a legible image can be greatly reduced. Here are three of the most important settings for controlling file size in BXS.

  • The third most important setting is the resolution. This should be set as low as possible (so long as the image remains legible). 200 DPI will work fine for most of your documents. Also bear in mind that the lower you set the resolution, the faster your documents are scanned into the system. With compression, dropping from 300 DPI to 200 DPI should drop the file size to about half what it was.
  • The second most important setting is the color. You should be scanning almost everything in bi-tonal (black and white). With compression, moving from 24 bit color to 200 DPI bi-tonal should drop the file size to less than 1% of what it was.
  • The most important setting which driver you use. Prior to the implementation of Banner 7, there was essentially no difference between the 'ISIS' driver and the 'Twain' driver. Both provided adequate compression, and the majority of people chose 'Twain'. Since the Banner 7 conversion, the Twain driver has not been doing compression. While we are attempting to find a way to get it to perform as it has in the past, we have found that the ISIS driver continues to provide compression that reduces file sizes by between 1/10th and 1/30th.
  • Please use Bi-tonal and the ISIS driver for most of your scanning until future notice. Please check these settings each time you sit down for a scanning session.
