Set Up 802.1x for Windows 7 Instructions

Step 1 – Find Network Device

On the Taskbar, click on Wireless Network Connections icon located at the Notification Area 

  • Click on Open Network and Share Center link.

  • In the Network and Sharing Center window, click Manage wireless networks link

 Step 2 – Add a network

  • Click Add button‌

  • Select Manually create a network profile option‌

  •  Enter the network information

    • Network name: MetroState

    • Security type: WP2-Enterprise

    • Encryption type: AES

    • Check Start this connection automatically box
  • Click Next button

  • When Windows notifies that Successfully add MetroState, click Close button

  • The MetroState network icon displays in the Manage wireless network window

 Step 3 – Open MetroState network Properties

  • Right-click the MetroState network icon > choose Properties

  • In the MetroState Wireless Network Properties dialog box, click Connection tab > check Connect automatically when this network is in range box

Step 4 – Set up Authentication Settings 

  • Click Settings button

  • In the MetroState Wireless Network Properties dialog box, click Security tab

  • Make sure the following options selected

    • Security type: WPA2-Enterprise

    • Encryption type: AES

    • Under Choose a network authentication method, select Microsoft: Protected EAP (PEAP)

    • Select Remember my credentials for this connection each time I’m logged on box

  • Click OK button to close Protected EAP Properties dialog box

Windows 7- 10

  •  In the Protected EAP Properties dialog box, do the following:

    • Uncheck Validate server certificate box

    • Under Select Authentication Method, select Secured password (EAP-MSCHAP) v2

    • Uncheck Enable Fast Reconnect box

    • Click Configure button > uncheck Automatically use my Windows logon name and password (and domain if any) box > click OK button

  • NOTE: If you use your personal laptop not MetroState laptop, you should disable Automatically use my Windows logon name and password (and domain if any) option because your account to log on your laptop might be different with your MetroState account.

Step 5 – Set up 802.1x settings

  • In the MetroState Wireless Network Properties dialog box, under Security tab, click Advanced settings button

  • In the Advanced settingsdialog box, do the following:

    •   Select 802.1X settings tab

    •   Check Specify authentication mode box

    •   Choose User authentication option

    •  Click Save credentials button‌

  • In the Windows Security dialog box, enter your credential information (MetroConnect account) > click OK button

Step 6 – Close Properties dialog boxes

  • Click on OK buttons to close all Properties dialog boxes

 

Step 7 – Connect to MetroState Network

By default, Windows XP will attempt to connect to wireless networks that it hears being broadcast. However, if you would like to manually connect to the network, do the following:

  • On the Taskbar, click on Wireless Network Connections icon located at  the Notification Area

  • Under Wireless Network Connection, click MetroState > click Connect button

  • Your laptop will automatically connect to MetroState wireless network
