Advising Information

Students in the Music Department are encouraged to meet with a faculty advisor on a regular basis. One meeting per semester is the recommended minimum frequency. Faculty advisors are able to assist students in the navigation of Course Sequences, facilitate course registration, and provide career advice. Students are assigned Faculty Advisors based upon their instrument and desired degree. Consult the music office for your faculty advisor's name and contact information.

General Studies Information

The General Studies Program is structured to foster the development of skills and to encourage students to use their mastery of skills to explore knowledge in a variety of disciplines. NOTE: Music majors and minors may not use music courses to fulfill their General Studies requirements.

The General Studies Program provides two levels of experience:

LEVEL I - Skills
Level I courses provide students with the basic skills of reading and listening critically, recognizing faulty reasoning, drawing conclusions from quantitative data, organizing ideas, and writing and speaking with clarity.

LEVEL II - Breadth of Knowledge
Level II courses introduce students to the basic methods, knowledge, problems or attitudes characteristic of a field: encourage in students an open attitude toward different approaches to problems, enable students to communicate with experts in other disciplines and learn from them and cultivate in students and informed awareness of the principal achievements in history, arts and letters, social science, and natural science. In addition, in Level II course students will continue to develop their skills in language and mathematics.

A student’s completed General Studies Program must contain at least 33 semester hours. Refer to the current Catalog for additional General Studies Program information, including course specifications.
