Carla Aguilar earned her Ph.D. in Music Education from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. She also earned a Master’s degree from the Jacobs School and a Bachelor’s degree from Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana, both in Music Education. She taught elementary general music, has served as an Associate Instructor for the Jacobs School of Music, and has taught undergraduate and graduate courses in music education at DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana and Indiana State University in Terre Haute, Indiana. She has also completed Kodály Certification from the Indiana University Kodály Institute.

Her research interests include policy related to music education, access to music education, and alternative certification for teachers. She has presented her research at the MENC’s National Conference, the International Society for Music Education Conference, the Society for Music Teacher Education Conference, the MayDay Colloquium, and Mountain Lake Colloquium. She recently had a collaborative article published in the Journal of Music Teacher Education on Alternative Certification. She continues to perform with the Indiana Army National Guard Band from Indianapolis, Indiana as a flute and piccolo player.
