Alexander Ritter George is a member of the Affiliate Faculty at Metropolitan State University of Denver, where he teaches applied horn and music theory courses. Dr. George founded Metro Horn Day, an annual event that brings horn students from the Front Range region of Colorado together for a day-long series of horn activities.
Prior to his appointment at MSU Denver, Dr. George served as a Graduate Part-Time Instructor at the University of Colorado at Boulder. His writings on horn literature and pedagogy have been published in The Horn Call: The Refereed Journal of the International Horn Society, and The Horn Player: The Magazine of the British Horn Society. He has presented clinics for the Aspen Music Festival and School, Colorado Music Educators Association, and El Sistema in Venezuela. He can be heard playing Principal Horn on two wind ensemble recordings: A Tent for the Sun with the University of Colorado Wind Symphony, and The Winds of Summer with the Duquesne University Wind Ensemble.
Dr. George premiered Thom Ritter George's Concerto for Horn with the Idaho State Civic Symphony in 2007. He won first prize at the 2007 Plowman Chamber Music Competition as Solo Horn of the Arundo Winds. As an orchestral musician, he has performed with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, Colorado Symphony Orchestra, Colorado Ballet Orchestra, and National Repertory Orchestra.
Alexander Ritter George earned a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Horn Performance and Pedagogy from the University of Colorado at Boulder, a Master of Music degree from Duquesne University, and a Bachelor of Music degree from the Curtis Institute of Music. His primary teachers were Jerome Ashby, William Caballero, and Michael Thornton. He plays on an M series Elkhart Conn 8D, "The Mile High," dating from 1969, restored by Ron Pinc of Chicago.
