Dr. Shawn Mollenhauer holds a Ph.D. and an M.A. in Ethnomusicology from the University of California, Riverside, as well as a B.A. in Music History & Theory from California State University, Fullerton. His Ph.D. dissertation entitled "Millions on the Margins: Music, Ethnicity, and Censorship among the Oromo of Ethiopia" demonstrates how music among the Oromo people of Ethiopia functions as a system for the preservation and negotiation of a uniquely Oromo identity, as well as a vehicle for resistance against the hegemony long ago established by outside ethnic groups. Both his professional fieldwork and personal performance history have been broad in scope, having done extended fieldwork in Mexico and Ethiopia, receiving a Fulbright IIE grant for the latter. He has long been, and indeed continues to be an enthusiastic performer of both Western and non-Western music.
