Composer and percussionist Sam Young was born in Missoula, Montana and grew up in Boulder, Colorado. Before beginning his formal music education, Mr. Young enjoyed a successful career as a professional drummer, touring and recording with Colorado bands The Samples and DeVotchKa, both of whose recordings have been released internationally. As composer, Mr. Young’s music has been commissioned and performed by ensembles across the United States. In April of 2011, his Trio for Violin, Cello, and Piano was premiered at Carnegie’s Weill Hall by the New York City based ensemble Alaria, and he has been a featured composer at summer festivals such as California Summer Music and the International Summer Academy of Music (ISAM) in Michelstadt, Germany. Sam is an active drummer and percussionist in the Denver area, and often performs with DeVotchKa singer Nick Urata’s solo project, Nick Urata and the Candelabras, among others. Sam is currently an affiliate faculty member at Metropolitan State University of Denver, where he teaches music theory.
