Profs available to comment on outcome of Pennsylvania primary

Denver – Will Pennsylvania be the keystone state in the race for the Democratic presidential nomination?

Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton is relying on a decisive win to reinvigorate her candidacy, while Sen. Barack Obama is hoping for an upset or a strong enough finish to secure the delegates needed to maintain his overall lead. To address the outcome of the primary, a number of Metropolitan State College of Denver professors are available, including the following:

Political Science Professor Norman Provizer has expertise in political leadership and elections. He has extensive media experience commenting on a variety of national and local political issues for The Boston Globe, The Denver Post, the Rocky Mountain News, 9NEWS, KOA Radio, FOX31, CW2 and 7NEWS.

Derrick Hudson, assistant professor of African and African American Studies, can provide perspective on how the words of the Jeremiah A. Wright, Jr., former pastor of Obama’s church, has impacted his run for U.S. presidency. Hudson’s guest column (http://www.denverpost.com/opinion/ci_8891590) that addresses the controversial relationship ran in the online edition of The Denver Post on April 11. Hudson’s expertise includes race relations, African Americans and U.S. politics and theological issues.

Associate Professor of Political Science Richard Moeller has expertise in democracy, American foreign and military policy, international security, politics and the media.

Fourth Annual Wellness TRYathlon

Event features activities to physically challenge the aging adult and an Italian themed-lunch catered to the taste of seniors

Denver – Seniors love soup, lemon and strong-tasting foods, according to Michael Wray, associate professor and director of Hotel, Tourism and Events (HTE) department at Metropolitan State College of Denver. With this in mind, 18 HTE students will prepare and serve a special meal to participants in Metro State’s fourth annual Wellness TRYathlon that is designed to educate Auraria Campus community members on leading a positive and healthy lifestyle. Ultimately, the goal is that participants will then share that knowledge with their colleagues, families and friends.

“We are asking our audience to relay what they learn during the luncheon to the seniors in their family,” says Wray.

The event will be held today from 11-1:30 p.m. on the Auraria Campus (11 a.m. at the West court in the PE Events Center for keynote and activities; the Plaza Building at noon for the luncheon.)

The 2008 TRYathlon will focus on health and wellness issues for the aging adult. Forty Auraria students, staff and faculty were identified as potential “change agents” and recruited to participate in this invitation-only event, which includes a keynote presentation, exercise routines and concludes with an Italian-themed lunch.

As in past years, the program will highlight three aspects: healthy movement, stress management and nutrition. Keynote speaker Joe Quatrochi, professor of Human Performance and Sport at Metro State, will address common myths regarding physical activity and health among the aging population. Aging adults face unique physical challenges, including lack of strength, balance, resistance training, and cardiovascular fitness.

For an Auraria campus map and parking please go to: www.mscd.edu/newsroom/directions.shtml

The Menu: Cold asparagus soup, garbanzo bean salad served with marinated and grilled Portobello mushroom, vegetable lasagna with low-fat cheese, low-fat focaccia bread, and almond anise biscotti with lemon sorbet on top.

UNIQUE VISUALS: Photographers and reporters are welcome to the behind-the-scenes meal prep in the Metro State kitchens beginning at 10 a.m. in Plaza Building, Room 124.

2008 TRYathlon sponsors include Campus Recreation at Auraria, Auraria Library, Health Center at Auraria, Metropolitan State College of Denver Office of Institutional Diversity, BACCHUS Network, Clif Bars, Colorado Beef Council, and Apple, Inc.
