History prof available to address the evolution of the Denver Nuggets

DENVER – With the win over the Dallas Mavericks on Wednesday night, the Denver Nuggets advanced to the Western Conference Finals for the first time since 1985.

Today, Nuggets fans are familiar with the names George Karl, Chauncey Billups, Carmelo Anthony and Kenyon Martin. But, long before them, there were others instrumental in building and maintaining the Nuggets’ franchise.

Metropolitan State College of Denver History Professor Adolph Grundman can provide perspective on the franchise’s history. He is the author of “The Golden Age of Amateur Basketball: The AAU Tournament, 1921-1968” (University of Nebraska Press, 2004) that includes a history of the Denver Nuggets, formerly the Denver Rockets.

To coordinate an interview with him, contact Angelia McGowan at 303-501-0752 or Professor Grundman directly at his office at 303-556-3174.

Rob Reuteman, former Rocky Mountain News business editor and columnist, will deliver the commencement address. Under his editorship, the paper’s business section won the Best in Business award for Overall Excellence for large newspapers from the Society of American Business Editors and Writers (SABEW) four times in 11 years, most recently for 2008. He currently serves as vice president of SABEW.

About the class
Of the 1,400 candidates, 61 percent are female and 39 percent male. The vast majority, more than 70 percent, are in their twenties. The oldest candidate is 73. Seven of the candidates represent the youngest at just 20 years old.

Latinos make up 10 percent of the total, and candidates of color 20 percent. Sixty-eight percent of the candidates started at Metro State as transfer students, and 26 percent entered directly from high school.

The top 10 majors are criminal justice and criminology, biology, management, psychology, English, accounting, behavioral science, history, nursing and social work. Nearly 13 percent are seeking teacher licensure.

Expert available to address selection process for next Supreme Court justice

Denver – Today, President Barack Obama announced that he has received notice from Supreme Court Justice David Souter of his plans for retirement. With the announcement comes the challenging task of finding a replacement before the first Monday in October, when the next Supreme Court session begins. So, what goes into selecting and seating a Supreme Court Justice?

Metropolitan State College of Denver Political Science Professor Norman Provizer is available to discuss this dynamic process. Some may automatically think that finding a sitting judge is the next step, but that’s not necessarily the case, according to Provizer. “It doesn’t need to be a sitting judge,” says Provizer. “The best justices have had no judicial experience.”

To coordinate an interview, contact Angelia McGowan at 303-501-0752 or Professor Provizer directly at his cell 303-809-5696.
