Metro State announces team to build and operate $40 million Hotel and Hotel Learning Center

Metropolitan State College of Denver has announced the selection of a team to design, develop, build and run the day-to-day operations of a flagged hotel, which will be accompanied by a hotel learning center to train Metro State students in a combined state-of-the-art working laboratory. Both elements are estimated to cost $40 million to build. Funds for the hotel will be raised through a public-private partnership, while donations will be sought for the hotel learning center.

Metro State remembers 9/11 with a jazz concert by the Air Force’s Falconaires

Metropolitan State College of Denver presents “Sharing the Freedom: A Concert of Remembrance and Hope,” featuring the Falconaires of the Air Force Academy Band and special guest composer and conductor Chie Imaizumi (pronounced Chee-ay Ee-my-zu-me). The concert will honor veterans and remember the events of 9/11. The event is free and open to the public.

Stephen Jordan, president of Metropolitan State College of Denver, has announced the appointment of Vicki Golich as provost/vice president for academic affairs. She will start Sept. 1, pending approval by Metro State’s Board of Trustees.

Metropolitan State College of Denver, in collaboration with the Consulate General of Mexico, is hosting a tequila tasting during a “Beer, Wine and Spirits” course offered in its Hospitality, Tourism and Events program. The featured guest is Miguel Cedeno Cruz, a consultant in the tequila industry who has also served on the Tequila Regulatory Council.

Governor to sign into law master’s programs at Metro State

A new frontier is on tap for Metropolitan State College of Denver with the development of a master’s program for the first time in its 44-year history. Gov. Bill Ritter is scheduled to sign into law HB-1295: A Bill for an Act Concerning Authorizing Metropolitan State College of Denver to Offer Master’s Degree Programs. The bill changes existing legislation, which had prohibited Metro State from offering graduate-level programs, to read as follows: “In furtherance of its role and mission, Metropolitan State College of Denver may offer master’s degree programs that address the needs of its urban service area.”

Bed bugs expert sets up shop in Denver

Does Denver have a bed bug problem? Probably so, says Metropolitan State College of Denver Assistant Professor of Biology Robert G. Hancock. Though he only arrived in Denver last year, he says he already has students bringing in samples from their own homes. “I had two cases in 15 years in Kentucky,” says Hancock. “I’ve had seven in a six-month span in Denver.”

Council on Social Work Education re-accredits Metro State’s program, which is the only program in the nation to offer undergraduate degrees on campus and online

Metropolitan State College of Denver’s Department of Social Work recently received re-accreditation from the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) for another eight years. It is the only accredited undergraduate program in the United States approved by the CSWE to offer the entire major on campus and via distance education.

Men’s Basketball Makes a Special Debut on Valentine's Day

The final regular home game for the Metropolitan State College of Denver men’s basketball team has turned into a sweet deal for the team and the College community. On Saturday, Feb. 14, the Roadrunners’ game against Colorado Christian University will be nationally televised on CBS CollegeSports. This is the first time that Metro State basketball will play on national television at home.
