(Denver, Colo.) — Metropolitan State College of Denver President Stephen Jordan today announced the next step in a yearlong process of gathering data to determine the perceptions surrounding the College’s name and what benefits could accrue from a change in its name.
Along with the College’s current name, three potential new names for the College are being considered: Metropolitan State University of Denver, University of Central Colorado and Denver State University.
"Consistent with the guidance from the trustees at the board retreat in October, we are moving forward with the [strategic name initiative],” Jordan says.
Jordan will host a town hall meeting to provide information and collect feedback on Feb. 9 at 7:30-9 a.m. in the Tivoli Turnhalle. The meeting is open to the public as well as the College community.
During the month of February, Sector Brands will be testing the names through a survey, one-on-one interviews and focus groups with faculty, staff, students, alumni, and community and business leaders
“The trustees see the value and benefits that could accrue to students and alumni, were the College to vote to change its name to something that would increase its stature within the community,” says Trustee Chair Rob Cohen. “So we are 100 percent behind Dr. Jordan in taking the initiative to its next logical step.”
The name assessment, conducted last spring by Sector Brands and reported to the board in June, showed that the current name does not reflect Metro State’s quality, size and complex offerings—including its recent addition of master’s degrees. It also indicated that there is confusion as to whether Metro State is a community college or a four-year institution.
The assessment also revealed that there was some concern on the part of certain populations that a change in name would signal a shift in mission. Jordan has indicated that he remains committed to the College’s mission of affordability, accessibility and high-quality education.
“I believe a change in the name can only mean positive things for the College,” says Kathryn “Kat” Cammack, Metro State student trustee. “I think this is long overdue, especially with the addition of graduate programs, the Student Success Building and the Hotel and Hospitality Learning Center, now seems to be the perfect time.”
A poll conducted last semester by the Student Government Assembly (SGA) found that most students are in favor of a name change, according to SGA President Sammantha O’Brien. “These days in this tough job market, you need every resource you can get from your college, including name recognition. Metro State needs to get on the map,” O’Brien says.
The previous assessment involved more than 1,000 participants including faculty, staff, students, alumni, employers, community members, legislators and the College’s boards. For a full list of information about the name change evaluation visit: www.mscd.edu/namechange.
