Name change passes in House on second reading
The bill to change Metro State’s name to Metropolitan State University of Denver this morning received a chorus of approval on second reading by the Colorado House of Representatives.
Several members voiced opposition at the microphone and asked for a “no” vote, but the “yes” votes prevailed on the voice vote. The bill, SB 148, is tentatively scheduled for the third reading tomorrow, at which time a recorded vote will be taken. Thirty-three votes are needed for final passage. Gov. John Hickenlooper will then need to sign the bill into law.
The name change has received bipartisan support from both chambers and no amendments have been added to the legislation.
The House Education Committee unanimously approved the bill March 14 and favorably recommended the bill to the committee of the whole. The Senate approved the bill February 29 with only one “no” vote after the Senate Education Committee unanimously approved it on Feb. 23.
