Enrollment Requirements

Candidates for the Personal Financial Planning Certificate program should hold a bachelor’s degree or have previous relevant work experience in some area of the financial services industry.

Starting in 2007 candidates for the CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER® certification must hold a bachelor’s degree. A candidate without a bachelor’s degree must complete all requirements for certification before January, 2007 to be eligible for certification. For more information go to www.cfp.net.

Classes are limited in size, with registrants being selected on a first-come basis.

To successfully complete the program participants must attend 80% of all class sessions and receive a “C” grade in all classes.

Transfer Credits

A student is allowed to take as many classes as he/she wants but in order to obtain the Certificate in Personal Financial Planning the student must successfully complete all six courses (FPI-FPVI). If a student transfers from another approved CFP® certification program we will accept a maximum of two courses and still allow the student to obtain the certificate. If a student has taken the majority of the classes at another approved CFP® certification program the student can still take the needed courses through our program. The student, however, will not complete Metro’s certificate program.

Transfer Credits will be Awarded for:

In order for a student to obtain the Personal Financial Planning Certificate the student must successfully complete the six courses, FPI-FPVI, with a final grade of a "C" or better.

A student may transfer into the program from other approved CFP(R) certification programs of which we will accept a maximum of two classes. Official transcripts must be received from the institution where the course was
taken, bear a recent date of issue, show authentication of issuing institution, and be signed by a school official. Upon receipt of the transcripts, the Porgram Director of Metropolitan State College of Denver's Personal Financial Planning Certificate program will evaluate the relevance of completed courses.

Transfer credits will be awarded for:

  • Courses completed at a CFP Board accredited institution within five years of transfer request date.
  • Courses completed with a grade of "C" or better.
  • A maximum of two courses may be transferred.

These courses are not restricted only to those wanting to complete Metropolitan State College of Denver's Personal Financial Planning Certificate Program but are also open to individuals wanting the information for their own personal use or for students needing it to complete another approved CFP(R) program.

Course Scheduling and Location

Each course (FP I - FP VI) meets one night per week for ten weeks from 6:00P.M.-9:00P.M. Courses are offered downtown, in the Tech Center or at the employer's place of business (minimum 10 enrollees). It is recommended that the courses be taken in sequential order as numbered, beginning with FP I.

Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards Inc. owns the certification marks CFP®, Certified Financial Planner™ and in the U.S., which it awards to individuals who successfully complete CFP Board’s initial and ongoing certification requirements.

Metro State does not certify individuals to use the CFP®, Certified Financial Planner™ and   marks.  CFP® certification is granted solely by Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards Inc. to individuals who, in addition to completing an educational requirement such as this CFP Board-Registered Program, have met ethics, experience and examination requirements.

This program is registered with the Certified Financial Planners Board of Standards, INC. and is part of the statewide Extended Studies Program. CFP® and CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ marks are owned by Certified Financial Board of Standards, INC. (CFP Board). Cancellation Policy

If you must cancel, written notice is required. Please notify us no less than 7 days prior for a full refund or credit towards futures courses. Cancellations received less than 7 days prior to the first class session will be subject to a 25% cancellation fee. No refunds will be made after the second class session.

Payment

Payment must be made prior to the first night of class in order to participate in a course. Payments may be made with check, cash, Visa, MasterCard, or Discover.

Continuing Insurance Credits

Courses FP I - FP VI are approved for 30 hours of continuing insurance credits. To obtain credit please call the Program Coordinator at (303)556-6998
