Graduate School Track

HUMAN DEVELOPMENT MAJOR: GRADUATE SCHOOL CONCENTRATION (HDV1). Students in the Graduate School concentration will complete 42 credit hours:

PART I. TAKE EACH OF THE FOLLOWING COURSES:

  1. PSY 1001 – Introductory Psychology.
    • Both semesters of General or Introductory Psychology must be taken in transfer for equivalence. Only 3 hours of Introductory Psychology count toward the major.
  2. PSY 2310 – Introduction to Statistics for Social and Behavioral Science.
    • Students who have taken MTH 1210 or equivalent in transfer before deciding to major in human development may substitute it for PSY 2310. However, MTH 1210 cannot be used both in the major and to satisfy the Level I General Studies mathematics requirement.
    • PSY 2310, PSY 3280, & PSY 4960 must be taken in sequence, one at a time (three semesters total).
  3. PSY 2320 – Inferential Statistics.
  4. PSY 3280 – Developmental Research Methods.
    • PSY 2310, PSY 3280, & PSY 4960 must be taken in sequence, one at a time (three semesters total).
  5. PSY 3340 – Cognitive Development and Learning.
  6. PSY 3350 – Psychology of Social Development.
  7. PSY 4960 – Senior Thesis in Human Development.
    • PSY 4960 meets university senior experience requirement.
    • PSY 2310, PSY 3280, & PSY 4960 must be taken in sequence, one at a time (three semesters total).

PART II. CHOOSE ONE COURSE FROM EACH OF THE FOLLOWING FIVE CATEGORIES:

    • PSY 2210 – Psychology of Human Development
    • PSY 2270 or SOC 3100 – Death and Dying
  2. CATEGORY #2 – DEVELOPMENTAL BREADTH:
    • PSY 3240 – Infancy
    • PSY 3250 – Child Psychology
    • PSY 3260 – Psychology of Adolescence
    • PSY 3270 – Adulthood and Aging
  3. CATEGORY #3 – HEALTH ISSUES:
    • HES 3070 – Parental Health Care Issues
    • NUT 2040 – Introduction to Nutrition
  4. CATEGORY #4 – SOCIAL INFLUENCES:
    • SOC 1040 – Introduction to Social Gerontology
    • SOC 3410 – The Family in Transition
    • SWK 2100 – Introduction to Family Social Work
  5. CATEGORY #5 – CULTURAL CONTEXT:
    • SOC 3400 – Childhood and Adolescent Socialization
    • RECR 2330 – Advocacy, Leisure, and the Aging Adult
    • ECE 3860 – Cultural Socialization of Children

PART III. ADDITIONAL COURSES - PICK TWO IN CONSULTATION WITH AN ADVISOR:

  1. SOC 1010 – Introduction to Sociology
  2. PSY 3970 – Practicum
  3. PSY 4450 – Advanced Statistics
  4. PSY 4970 – Teaching of Psychology
  5. PSY 4980 – Independent Studies
