Academic Warning / Probation / Suspension Policy

**Other academic standards may apply to specific programs.
Please see information on the program of interest to determine specific standards for that program.**

Academic Good Standing / Satisfactory Progress

A student is deemed to be making satisfactory progress toward his/her academic goal if the student maintains a cumulative GPA of 2.00 or higher.

This student is deemed to be in academic good standing with the institution.

Academic Warning Status

A student in good standing whose cumulative GPA falls below 2.00 will be placed on academic warning status with the institution.

A student will be removed from this warning status and return to good standing if he/she achieves a cumulative GPA of at least 2.00 at the end of the warning semester.

Academic Probation Status

A student who fails to achieve a cumulative GPA of at least 2.00 at the end of his/her semester on warning status will be placed on academic probation status with the institution.

A student will remain on academic probation status for no more than three semesters as long as he/she has a cumulative GPA below 2.00 and is making progress toward good standing. A student is removed from academic probation status and is returned to good standing the semester after he/she achieves a cumulative GPA of at least 2.00.

While a student is on academic probation status, the student must make progress toward good standing with the institution by adhering to the following conditions:

  • Must achieve a semester GPA of 2.20 or higher,

  • Must not register for more than 13 credit hours per semester for fall and spring and, if attending summer semester, no more than 6 credit hours for summer,

  • Must register for and complete a minimum of 3 credit hours for fall and spring, and

  • Must participate in activities as recommended by the office of Student Intervention Services. This may include registering for certain classes, repeating courses, tutoring and other activities.

While on academic probation status a student will not be allowed to register for successive semesters without verification of compliance with the conditions aforementioned.

If a student remains on probation status for three semesters and has not made progress toward good standing, that student will be subject to Academic Suspension.

Academic Suspension

A student on academic probation not making progress toward good standing with the institution will be prohibited from registering at the institution for one calendar year and will be placed on academic suspension status.

Students on academic suspension status may elect to appeal the decision through a suspension appeal application. The suspension appeal application will be submitted to the Director of Student Intervention Services who will in turn deli ver the request to the Student Academic Review Committee. The appeal will be reviewed and the student will be notified of the final decision. A student may appeal a suspension, at most, two times in his/her academic career at MSCD.

A student on probation status whose cumulative GPA remains below a 2.00 after three or more semesters will have his/her academic progress reviewed at the end of each semester by the Student Academic Review Committee to determine whether the student should be placed on suspension.

In both cases, the decision of the Student Academic Review Committee is final. Any student returning to MSCD after the one calendar year suspension must reapply and will be readmitted to MSCD on academic probation status. For these students, all probation status conditions, as outlined above, will apply.
