Personal Biography Statement

Born in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, Theresa Crater grew up in the middle of the civil rights movement, an experience that left her believing anything is possible. She did her undergraduate work in English at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, the school where you can throw a rock and hit at least two writers. She studied Vedic philosophy and taught meditation, and then returned to graduate school and received her Ph.D. from the University of Washington, in beautiful, rainy Seattle. She also holds an MA in Counseling from the University of Colorado--the Springs.
Theresa's first teaching job was in the Writing Center at the Evergreen State College, the alternative school that had the distinction of being slated for closure by state senators every four years until it gained an international reputation. Theresa went on to teach humanities and writing at South Puget Sound Community College. Seeking the sun, she moved to Colorado and has been at Metropolitan State College of Denver since 1992 where she teaches literature and writing, including a workshop on writing science fiction and fantasy.
Under the Stone Paw is her first novel. The second is Beneath the Hallowed Hill. She has published short stories, the latest "Bringing the Waters" in The Aether Age: Helios, some poetry and a number of articles. Her scholarly writings have focused mainly on Virginia Woolf, Doris Lessing and The X-Files.
