Personal Biography Statement
Desiré J.M. Anastasia completed her Doctor of Philosophy degree in sociology at Wayne State University specializing in gender inequality in September 2008. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Interdisciplinary Studies in Social Sciences: Law & Society from Michigan State University in East Lansing in 1999, and her Master of Liberal Arts in Women’s Studies from Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti in 2001. Her areas of specialization include sociology of the body, body modification, gender inequality, domestic violence and sexual assault, social control, feminist theory, and feminist research methods. She has taught Women’s Studies courses at Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan and at San Diego State University, Sociology courses at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan, Criminal Justice courses at San Diego State University, and Sociology courses at the University of San Diego. She has also been a grant writer for the Center for Ethics in Science and Technology in San Diego, a research director for a social marketing company in downtown San Diego, and a graduate assistant for the Graduate School at Wayne State University, the Women’s Studies Department at Eastern Michigan University, and the Holman Learning Center at Eastern Michigan University. Desiré has given a multitude of conference presentations about her research at the local, regional, and national level in the U.S. and in Canada. In addition to her dissertation research on tattooed women, her research has included an analysis of demographic data on Wayne State University’s graduate student population, a statistical analysis of survivors of domestic violence in San Diego County, and a content analysis of educational television programs on tattoos.
