Personal Biography Statement

My name is Denise Mowder and I am an Assistant Professor of the Criminal Justice and Criminology Department at Metropolitan State University of Denver. I am also an attorney and for over ten years I was a prosecutor in Oregon. I specialized in prosecuting cases of domestic violence, child abuse and sexual assault. My expertise is in trial practice, investigations and victim advocacy.

I earned my Ph.D. in Criminal Justice from Washington State University. I earned my J.D. from Willamette College of Law at Willamette University in Salem Oregon. I received my B.S. at that University of Colorado, Denver.

My research area focuses on the impact of current immigration law and the undocumented battered Latina woman. In particular, does the fear of deportation outweigh the fear of being battered.

I love teaching criminal justice courses because when I was a prosecutor there wasn't a day when I didn't interact with the police, judges, defense attorneys, victims, and offenders. It is important to understand the theoretical groundwork but I never forget about “doing justice” in the real world. I want all my students to consider both theory and practice in all of my courses.
