Personal Biography Statement
It is a pleasure to teach German language, literature and culture at Metro State. I enjoy every semester - since Fall 1996!

Educational Biography
After receiving an Honors B.A. in German from the University of Pennsylvania in 1984, I pursued graduate study in German Literature at the Pennsylvania State University. I was awarded the M.A. in 1988 and the Ph.D. in 1995. My dissertation was directed by Manfred Keune.
I also studied at the universities of Munich (Junior Year in Munich Program 1982-83), Kiel (Penn State Exchange Fellowship 1986-87), Hamburg and Berlin (German Academic Exchange Fellowship 1992-93).
I returned to Metro State after Sabbatical Leave for the academic year 2007-08 in Germany as a Fulbright Senior Lecturer and Researcher at the University of Siegen.

Research Areas/Interests
My current research involves the writings of Nobel Prize for Literature laureate Heinrich Boell (1917-1985), about whom I maintain a website in the WWW, and an Online Boell Biographical Database. I published in 1999 a major study on the topics of history, crime, violence and the victim in both Boell's nonfictional and fictional works: Heinrich Boell als Moralist [Heinrich Boell as Moralist], available from Peter Lang, Publishing.
I have also presented papers on the role of computer-mediated instruction and materials, technology in teacher training, and Business German and the WWW.

Professional Affiliations
A former Chapter President and Webmaster of the Colorado/Wyoming Chapter of the American Association of Teachers of German (AATG), I am a Life Member of this national association.
Active in the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) and the Small Undergraduate German Programs Special Interest Group of ACTFL, I served in the latter as Chair and the Webmaster.
A former voting Board Member of the Colorado Congress of Foreign Language Teachers (CCFLT), I served also from May, 2000 to May, 2005 as the Webmaster, a non-voting member of the Board.
I serve as a member of the National Advisory Council for the JYM Program in Munich since 2004.

Teaching Philosophy
My teaching philosophy is to challenge both my students and myself to achieve our best.
I was awarded a President's Performance Stipend for Teaching Excellence in August 2004.
As a recipient of a Bright Ideas / Best Practices Teaching Award at the 2002 Metro State Annual Fall Conference, when my submission on guiding students to create "Cybertrips to German-speaking countries" was one of four judged by faculty peers to be exceptional, I received both recognition at this conference and a professional development stipend in honor of this achievement.
I was also awarded an Excellence in Academic Advising Award in May, 2000.
