Personal Biography Statement
Jim Furrer returned to teaching following over 35 years in newspapers, radio, network television, movies, theatre, concert music and corporate video. His broadcast career includes stints at KFOR-AM, KHKS-FM, KRNU-FM, KOLN-TV, KUON-TV, and KRMA-TV. From 1984 to 1990 he taught and unit-managed courses at the International Film and Television Workshops in Rockport, Maine and MTI in Golden, Colorado.
Launching his career as director of photography in 1983, Jim shot the 1997 motion picture "Raising The Stakes" and went on to film movies "Sign Of The Times", "Moosie", "Behind The Mask", TV pilots "Class" and "Alex and Jody". He shot 2nd unit on "Princess and the Dwarf" and on "Switchback" starring Dennis Quaid and Danny Glover; plus cinematography on mini-series "Tantalus" for the BBC.
As DP, he won the Emmy for "First Cowboy's Fall From Grace" on PBS. Other major television credits include BBC's “Walking With Dinosaurs”, TLC's “Three Minutes To Impact", "Ancient Voices" in HD for the Colorado History Museum, "Of Angels and Light" for HDNet and DCM and the feature-length social documentary "When I Hear Thunder". National TV spots include Dish Network, DirecTV, Delicato Vineyards, Echostar, Maaco, Raid, Starz, and many others.
His time in Los Angeles included "Ringo Starr So Far", "Chris Botti In Concert", and the TV series "Leonard Maltin Presents" for Hallmark Channel. Music videos include Bad Company, Chris Botti, Counting Crows, John Denver, Devo, Del Amitri, Mary Chapin-Carpenter, Gloria Estefan, Fleetwood Mac, Sonia Dada, Shaun Colvin, Ray Charles, Leo Kottke, Little Steven, Sting, Widespread Panic and ZZ Top. Jim was one of five cameramen for "Under A Blood Red Sky; U-2 At Red Rocks" shot on location at Red Rocks for British TV's "The Tube".
Currently tenure-track Assistant Professor of Broadcasting at Metro State College in Denver, Jim lives with his wife Lynne in Littleton, Colorado and pursues traditional silver-gelatin black and white photography.
