Personal Biography Statement
Hi! I’m Jennifer Joy and I am originally from Syracuse, NY; however, I have been living in Denver, CO for the past 11 years. Denver is a great place to live with so many sunny days and lovely mountains. I graduated from a NASP and APA approved doctoral program at the University of Northern Colorado with a PhD in School Psychology and a doctoral minor in Statistics in 2006. My dissertation study utilized Structural Equation Modeling to better understand positive social competence in preschool populations. My main areas of interest are early social-emotional development and early literacy. Specifically, I have presented at conferences both nationally and in Colorado on phonemic awareness.
Other
For the last eight years, I have been working as a school psychologist in the public schools. In this capacity, I have completed hundreds of cognitive, social/emotional, and social/adaptive assessments. I gravitate toward a high-needs population and I have enjoyed all of the families and students I have been fortunate enough to work with in the schools. My work has been with many families who speak Spanish at home, and much of my time, a portion of my job role has been dedicated to preschool populations. Seeing the practical implications of recent legal changes in Special Education firsthand will hopefully allow me to be a strong mentor for new students. As a school psychologist, I have served as a mentor and supervisor to students, wrote a portion of a district manual focused on procedure for eligibility under various categories of service, served as the leader of the special education team at the school level, served various special populations and special programs, and also worked in various school settings (traditional, standards-based, Turnaround, charter, Head Start, etc).
Research Areas/Interests
I have a strong understanding of child development, research methodology, and behavioral interventions. My personal strength is my ability to employ my knowledge of statistics to give practical and useful examples. I also pride myself in my ability to provide information in a family-friendly manner and that is framed in a positive light. My hope is that my passion and enthusiasm for research trickles over in the direction of my students.
Personal
In my spare time, I spend time with my adorable and lovable American Bulldog. I enjoy the mountains, hiking in the summer and skiing in the winter. Also, I enjoy pilates, zumba, nia and my Gazelle. I am also a huge fan of the San Francisco 49ers and I look forward to football season to follow my team in fantasy football. Laughing is an important part of each day, so I hope to teach in a manner that is both informative and fun. I am looking forward to meeting all of you.
