Personal Biography Statement

Richard A. (Dick) Piekarski holds an M.A. degree in Communication from the University of Northern Colorado and a B.S. degree in Engineering Sciences from the United States Military Academy at West Point. He completed extensive graduate studies in Journalism and Mass Media Communications at Wayne State University in Detroit and has studied Marketing at Colorado University, and the Communication of Technical Information at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He is now in his third career field after spending 10 years in uniform. He served as a unit commander, brigade staff officer, and combat infantry advisor to South Vietnamese forces during the Vietnam conflict of which he is a decorated veteran. On the eve of promotion to the rank of Major he resigned his commission and launched his second career in non-profit public relations and marketing communications. After more than 30 years as a creator and manager of effective and creatively persuasive communication for a major U.S. city, two urban universities, and a national research laboratory, he moved to the classroom as an adjunct (affiliate) instructor. Since 2001, he has been teaching communication at Metropolitan State College of Denver, the Community College of Denver, and the Community College of Aurora in a committed belief that it is the one discipline that can lead an individual to success, happiness and satisfaction in both their personal and professional lives. Piekarski has been happily married to the same woman since 1968. Together they raised three well-adjusted sons and contributed to the healthy development of character, cooperation, and sportsmanship in the hundreds of Golden area youngsters they influenced over a 20-year-period as volunteer soccer coaches. His current goals in life are to continue learning, improving, serving and going dancing with his wife.
