Personal Biography Statement

Virginia McCarver, Ph.D. University of Colorado at Boulder

Dr. McCarver teaches classes in the area of rhetoric, gender, pop culture and media, and communication methods. Her approach to teaching revolves around encouraging a critical consciousness in her students and helping students identify and assess the messages they encounter and contribute to everyday. Her scholarly interests include representations of feminist activism in popular culture--in particular how the third wave of feminism is packaged and portrayed in a variety of media outlets--as well as how critical rhetorical methods develop over time in response to changes in media and message delivery. She is the recipient of the Organization for Research on Women and Communication Feminist Scholar Award. Her work appears in Feminist Media Studies, Women's Studies in Communication, thirdspace, and Women & Language.
