March 2, 2007 The Auraria Police Department is investigating the theft of a laptop computer from a Metro State faculty member's office in the Department of Psychology on Wednesday, February 28, 2007. The stolen computer, which was password protected, contained roster information of 988 students, including their names and Social Security numbers, in the faculty member's classes from the beginning of the 1999 fall semester through the end of the 2002 fall semester. The Social Security numbers were used as identifiers for the students, as they pertained to the faculty member's classes. The names and Social Security numbers of these students
may have been compromised through this theft. There is no evidence
at this time that the crime was one of identity theft. However,
because the potential for identity theft exists, Metro State is encouraging
all affected parties to take the proper precautions, including placing
fraud alerts on their credit reports. Click on FAQs for more information. You can also call toll free 1-877-352-7548, or go to AskIT Help Desk for additional help.
