Child Welfare Stipend Program
The Department of Social Work has awarded out over $1,204,000 in stipends to seniors majoring in social work with a child welfare emphasis who apply and are selected by the Child Welfare Stipend Committee. As long as funds continue to be available, seniors in good standing in the Social Work Department may apply for stipends in the amount ranging from $8,000 - $14,000. After graduation, stipend students must complete twelve months of work payback at a county department of social services as a paid employee. These funds are federal dollars given to the Colorado Department of Human Services. These State funds are then awarded to Metropolitan State University of Denver, Department Social Work (undergraduate) and the University of Denver, Graduate School of Social Work.
Academically, stipend applicants must fulfill a Child Welfare Area of Emphasis (CWE). The Child Welfare Stipend is a competitive program. For information about the availability of student stipends, please contact the department office. Applications are available to students during January or February of their Junior year.
Social work majors with a child welfare emphasis must meet the same non-social work prerequisites and multicultural perspective requirements as all other social work majors. Social work majors with a CWE also complete the same required social work course requirements as all other social work majors. The child welfare emphasis consists of:
