Progress Report

An essential element of the Strategic Plan initiative is to keep the College community informed of the committee's progress toward developing a new Strategic Plan by April 2012.

Below is a report on significant achievements within the six phases of the planning process.

Complete:

Phase I – Getting Organized, Summer 2010

Among the key elements to this phase were establishing the Strategic Planning Committee and communicating the importance of strategic planning to Metro State's future. In addition, the committee laid out its timeline and process.

Phase II – Data Gathering and Engagement, Fall 2010

The committee assessed the 2005 Strategic Plan (Acrobat Icon 174 KB) outcomes, based on its four goals and the objectives for each. Co-chairs Lucas and Sahami presented an Executive Summary (22 KB) Metro State Strategic 2005 Plan Update in 2010 22 KB of the Full Assessment (308 KB) to the Board of Trustees at the Dec. 1, 2010 board meeting. Read the December 2010 This Week @Metro article about the presentation.

Phase III – Making Sense of the Issues, Spring 2011

The committee conducted dozens of interviews with College constituents, from affiliate faculty, the business community and students to faculty and administrators to conduct 17 SWOT analyses (analyses of strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats). After synthesizing the SWOT results, the committee arrived at five major issues affecting the College: resources, academic excellence, stakeholder relationships, institutional identity and institutional climate.

Phase IV – Vision Building, Summer 2011

Subcommittees of the Strategic Planning Committee have crafted concept papers around the five main issues identified in Phase III that provide a state-of-the-College snapshot. The papers were presented at the all-day Strategic Planning Vision Conference, Aug. 16 on campus. The conference brought together about 50 people—including faculty, administrators, staff, trustees, alumni and local community leaders—to analyze the main issues and establish a preferred vision for Metro State’s future.

Phase V – Goals Building, Fall 2011 and Winter 2012

At the Oct. 14 Goals Conference, a new set of goals (Strategic Planning Document Goals Conference Notes Oct. 14, 2011 70 KB ) was created using the vision statement. These goals were submitted to the Board of Trustees in December 2011. The committee also worked on a draft of the Five-Year Strategic Plan, which was presented and approved by the Board of Trustees at the April 5 meeting.

Implementation, beginning May 2012 through June 2013

In this phase, the Plan (Acrobat Icon 281 KB)   will be implemented; however, the committee will continue its work by periodically reconvening to review actions and assess progress, provide updates to the trustees as needed and develop annual updates on the plan's direction to the Metro State community.
