Pantel, Braelin
Student Engagement & Wellness

How are you a resource to student leaders on campus?
I am happy to assist students who may be interested in moving an idea to action and need help with finding the appropriate pathway to do so! In my role at the University I am a student affairs "generalist"- that is, I have fairly general (and broad) responsibilities but all related to services for students. For that reason, I can help people identify the right campus partners, understand the possible policy considerations, or otherwise understand how to navigate the University. Some of my specific responsibilities also include support for student veterans, oversight of the Student Food Bank, student recognition/awards, and support and involvment with Student Conduct and Conflict Resolution Services.

How did you demonstrate leadership during your undergraduate career?
I was (and still am!) a member of Gamma Phi Beta sorority. My experiences as an officer for my sorority provided me with an opportunity to develop confidence in myself. In turn, this enabled me to be a leader in other areas of my life. For example, I worked as a Program Assistant for Student Activities. In this role I, along with a team of my peers, planned and executed all large scale campus activities for students. I learned a ton about professional communication, listening (and responding!) to others, budgeting, marketing, risk management, and other skills that I use in my work today.

Price, Tony
Campus Recreation at Auraria

How are you a resource to student leaders on campus?
My current position has allowed me the opportunity to manage a program in a shared facility with the Department of Human Performance (HPS) and Sport and the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics (IA).  This is a role that requires effective communication skills, the ability to be a sound negotiator and visible leader.  My focus is student centered and I enjoy the opportunity to working with student leaders and events on campus.   Leading people can be a very challenging, but rewarding task.  As mentioned before, I supervise four, full-time professionals and eighty student employees.  I feel a quality manager needs to know the importance of when to lead, when to follow, and how to be an effective listener.  In order to be an effective manage for your team, you must address conflict in a professional and positive manner, you must inspire, and you must foster an environment for your team to succeed.  In addition to my primary job duties, I have taken on a number of leadership roles on the Auraria Campus.  Ive chaired the planning committee for the annual Martin Luther King Peace Breakfast, Diversity Leadership Conference, and the Graduation Ceremony for African and African American Students.  With fellow colleagues, we recently piloted Brother to Brother, a retention and leadership program for male students of color also realize the value of being engaged with the community.  The successes of these programs are contingent upon effective organizational and communication skills as well as the ability to demonstrate effective followership and leadership.

How did you demonstrate leadership during your undergraduate career?
I received a Bachelors of Arts in Business Administration with an emphasis in Marketing from the University of Colorado, Boulder.  I was an active member of the Sports Marketing Club and Black Student Alliance.  I was also a student employee for the Recreation and Athletic Departments.  After graduation I was accepted into the University of Iowas Leisure and Sports Management program where I received a Masters of Arts in Sports Management with an emphasis in Athletic Administration.  During my studies at the University of Iowa, I served as a Graduate Assistant for the Recreational Services Department as an Intramural sports coordinator and facility supervisor.  This position provided numerous professional development and leadership opportunities specific to coordinating and supervising recreation and athletic activities.

Sylvester, Anthony
Student Government

How are you a resource to student leaders on campus?
As the current Vice President of Student Government I serve as in information center for all students--constantly updating myself on the latest issues and news on campus. What separates me; however, is the fact that I remain a student: I am in a unique position where I am able to see things from an administrative perspective as well as a student one.  To take it one step further, I am also fortunate to partake in the University's shared governance policies. In this role on campus, I truly feel I am in  position to hear the student's concerns and make the changes necessary.

How did you demonstrate leadership during your undergraduate career?
During the first three years of my college career I participated in NCAA sports as a Baseball player at MSU Denver. Balancing the physical and time requirements of the sport with the time requirements of being a Biology and Chemistry Major taught me the diligence needed to pursuit any dream. I always thought it was corny to say athletes "learn how to become a leader both on and off of the field," but I couldn't agree more.
