How to Help- Supporting the Metro State Food Bank

The MSU Denver Food Bank is stocked entirely by donations from caring individuals and groups who are committed to helping MSU Denver students in need. The viability of the Food Bank is directly linked to your generosity. On behalf of MSU Denver students, thank you for your support.

There are a variety of ways that individuals and groups can help support the MSU Denver Food Bank. Some information is provided here, but please don't hesitate to call and speak with a Student Food Bank Coordinator to discuss your interests.

Drop-off-Donations

The MSU Denver Student Food Bank welcomes drop-off donations during regular hours. The Food Bank is equipped to distribute non-perishable and non-expired food items and select personal care items to MSU Denver students. We do not have facilities to safely store perishable food items and therefore cannot accept perishable donations (including fresh dairy, produce, or meats). Likewise, the following items are not accepted as donations: medicine, vitamins/supplements, medical devices/supplies, clothing, toys, furniture, or other household goods.

A spring 2012 survey of student Food Bank clients indicates that protein is the highest demand item. The following items all make excellent donations:

peanut butter

jelly

shampoo

canned tuna fish

rice

soap

canned chicken

canned beans

toilet paper

canned/dry soup mixes

snack/protein bars

deodorant

canned fruit

grains

toothbrushes/paste

cereal (hot/cold)

pasta/sauce

hand sanitizer

If you prefer to make a monetary donation please bring a check, made out to the MSU Denver Food Bank, to the Office of Student Engagement & Wellness in Tivoli 311. Donated gift cards to food retailers are also welcome. Gift card donations should also be brought to Student Engagement & Wellness.

Volunteering

Although we don't have the space to accomodate on-site volunteers in the Food Bank on a regular basis, from time to time we may have a need for volunteer support with food drives or special events. Please call us at 303.352.7094 if you'd like to be contacted when specific volunteer needs arise.

The MSU Denver Student Food Bank is an agency of Food Bank of the Rockies. Through the Volunteers in Partnership (VIP) program, the MSU Denver Food Bank can receive credit towards food for your time spent volunteering. Make sure to mention you are volunteering for the MSU Denver Food Bank when you sign up for a volunteer shift with Food Bank of the Rockies so that we can earn credit for your time! Please refer to the Food Bank of the Rockies Volunteer Overview Letter (69 KB) and submit a Food Bank of the Rockies Volunteer Application (530 KB)  to get started.

Planning a Food Drive

Organizations, departments, and individuals can make significant contributions to the MSU Denver Student Food Bank by organizing Food Drives. There's no single right way to run a Food Drive, but we have some tips to offer interested individuals.
