Getting Started
Open PDF Documents in Acrobat X
1. Open Adobe Acrobat X Pro program
2. On the Menu Bar, click File menu > click Open
3. In the Open dialog box, select the PDF file you want to open > click Open button

Change View Scale of the Document
By default, PDFs open at their widest possible amount in Adobe Acrobat. To reduce the view scale, do one of the following:
- In the Navigation and View Toolbar, do one of the following:
- Click the button which is Fit one full page to window to get an idea of how large an individual page in the PDF file is

- Adjust the zoom view by clicking the plus and minus button

Use the shortcut keyboard to zoom in or out
- To zoom in, press CTRL + plus sign (+)
- To zoom out, press CTRL + minus sign (-)
- To zoom to 100% size, press CTRL + 1
Go to Different Pages in the PDF
Move up and down pages in the PDF
Do one of the following:
1. Use the scroll wheel on the mouse to scroll up and down the pages
2. In the Navigation and View Toolbar, click the Up or Down arrow
Move a specific page number in the PDF
Do one of the following:
1. In the Navigation and View Toolbar, type in the specific page number in the textbox > press ENTER
2. If the document is in Fit one full page to window view, drag the scrollbar on the left side of the Document pane which will display a thumbnail of the page and the page number

Switch Between Opened Documents
1. On the Menu Bar, click Window menu
2. Under the list of current opened documents, click on the name of the document you want to switch to

Customize the Toolbar with Quick Tools
Acrobat Pro X has a feature for you to add commands from anywhere in the tools or the Command panel to the toolbar

Add, Remove, and Group Quick Tools on Toolbar
1. On the Toolbar, click the gear
icon
2. In the Customize Quick Tools dialog box, do any the following:
- In the Choose Quick Tools to Add: box, select a desired tool you want to add to Quick Tools bar > click the right arrow button to add to Quick Tools to Show: box

- To group or move quick tools, in the Quick Tools to Show: box, select a quick tool > click the Up or Down arrow button to move it to a desired order

- To remove a quick tool, in the Quick Tools to Show: box, select a quick tool that you want to remove > click the left arrow button to move it back to the Choose Quick Tools to Add: box
Add separators to separate Quick Tools on Toolbar
1. On the Toolbar, click the gear
icon
2. In the Customize Quick Tools dialog box, do any the following:
- In the Quick Tools to Show: box, select any tool
- Click the Separator button
- Click the Up or Down arrow button to move it to a desired position

Quick notes
- Acrobat will remember the customization that you did to the Quick Tools bar
- If you forgot what tools the icons stand for on the Toolbar, you can hover the cursor over any of these icons to see the explanatory tooltips displayed for each of these icon
Use the Pages Panel to Navigate
- The Navigation panel that you will be using a lot in Adobe Acrobat is the Pages panel or Page Thumbnails panel. When you scroll down through the panel, there are thumbnails of each page in the PDF in order to help you easily to go to a page you want by simply double-click it in the Page Thumbnails panel

- To turn on Pages panel, under Navigation and View Toolbar, click on Page Thumbnails

Adjust the size of the Pages panel
Resizing the Pages Thumbnails panel allows you to display more page thumbnails on the same row, which is especially helpful when working with a really long document. To adjust the size of the Pages panel, do one of the following:
- Drag the Grab Bar on the side of the Pages panel to make it wider or smaller

- Click on the Options button on the top of the Pages panel > click on either Reduce Page Thumbnails or Enlarge Page Thumbnails option

Get more options on a specific seledcted page
To get more options on a specific selected page in the PDF such as delete selected page, crop pages, or print selected page, do the following:
1. Right-click on the page thumbnail > select a desired option from the contextual menu
2. Click on the Options button on the top of the Pages panel

Rearrange the page order and delete pages in a PDF
- To rearrange the order of pages in your PDF, drag and drop a desired page thumbnail in the Pages panel to a different place

- To delete page(s) in your PDF, select page(s) that you want to delete > do one of the following:
- Right-click on the selected page > choose Delete Pages… from the contextual menu

- Click on the red cross icon on the top of the Pages panel

Select and Copy Text and Graphics
It’s very common operation with PDFs in Acrobat to select text, graphics or both in a PDF document and reuse them in different other documents such as e-mail message or an article that you are writing in Microsoft Word.
Select and copy text
1. On the Navigation and View Toolbar, click on the Selection tool icon

2. Drag over the text with the Selection tool
3. Do one of the following:
- On the Menu Bar, click Edit menu > choose Copy

- Press CTRL + C (Windows User) or Cmd + C ( Macintouch User)
- Right-click on the selected text > choose Copy or Copy with Formatting option from the contextual menu

4. Open a program that you want to paste the selected text to (for example MS Word)
Select and copy graphics
1. On the Navigation and View Toolbar, click on the Selection tool icon
2. Do one of the following:
- On the Menu Bar, click Edit menu > choose Copy

- Press CTRL + C (Windows User) or Cmd + C ( Macintouch User)
- Right-click on the selected picture > choose Copy Image

Select a partial of text and/or graphics
1. On the Navigation and View Toolbar, click on the Selection tool icon

2. Use the Selection tool to drag a selection rectangle in which everything inside the blue rectangle is selected

3. Right-click on the selection area > choose Copy with Formatting option on the contextual menu

Rotate Pages
When using Acrobat, you might want to be able to change the orientation of pages so that you can easily read, edit or permanently save the PDF with a different page orientation
Rotate pages for reading
Acrobat Pro X allows you to rotate pages for the viewing, which doesn’t change the formatting of the PDF file
1. Select the page you want to rotate for viewing
2. On the Menu Bar, click on View menu > point to Rotate View option > select either Clockwise or Counterclockwise option
Rotate pages and save rotation settings
Acrobat Pro X allows you to rotate actual pages so that they are saved with the new orientation
1. Under Navigation and View Toolbar, click on Page Thumbnails
2. In the Pages panel, select the page thumbnail you want to rotate permanently
3. Do one of the following:
- Click on the Options button on the top of the Pages panel > choose Rotate Pages
- Right-click on the selected page thumbnail > choose Rotate Pages… from the contextual menu

- Click Tools > select Rotate option on the Tools panel

4. In the Rotate Pages dialog box, do the following:
- Click the Direction down arrow to select a desired rotation direction
- Under Page Range section, choose which pages should be rotated
- For more rotating options, click the down arrows next to Rotate to select further options
- Click OK button

5. On the Menu Bar, click File menu > point to Save As > choose PDF… option

Change the View Options
When you are looking at a multi-page PDF in Acrobat X Pro, there are different ways to change the viewing options, which helps you to easily work on the current PDF document. Depending on the kind of document you are currently working on, you can change your documents to various view options provided in Acrobat X Pro
Single Page View (default view)
This is the default viewing option, which shows the PDF in the normal screen with a gray background.
1. In a Single Page mode, you only see one page at a time when you drag the Scrollbar up or down along with the document

2. On the Menu Bar, click View menu > point to Page Display > choose Single Page option

Enable Scrolling
- When you enable scrolling option, you can move the scroll wheel on your mouse to see the bottom of previous page and the top of the next page and they’re separated by a small space gap between them

- On the Menu Bar, click View menu > point to Page Display > choose Enable Scrolling option

Two Page View
If you are looking at a newsletter in Acrobat that needs to be looked at as spreads, Two Pages View allows you to see two pages of the newsletter at the same time
1. On the Menu Bar, click View menu > point to Page Display > choose Two Pages View option
2. To display the first page and the last page of the newsletter on their own in Two Pages View, click View menu > point to Page Display > choose Show Cover Page in Two Page View option

Read Mode view
Read Mode view will help you to concentrate on reading the content of the PDF document by hiding the Toolbar and the panels to eliminate as much as possible any distraction from the user interface. However, when you move the cursor to the page, there is a little pop-up menu displayed that gives you page navigation controls
1. To enable Read Mode, do the following:
- On the Menu Bar, click View menu > point to Page Display > choose Two Pages View option to switch to the Single Page View (default view)

- Do one of the following:
- On the Menu Bar, click View menu > choose Reading Mode option

- On the Toolbar, click
button above the Tasks Panes

- On the keyboard, press CTRL + H (PC users) or Cmd + H (Mac users)
2. To exit the Read Mode, do one of the following:
- On the keyboard, press ESC key
- Move the cursor to the page > click the X button on the Navigation Control Menu
Full Screen Mode
The Full Screen Mode will display pages fitting on the desktop screen with the black background. Also, if there are page transitions saved with the PDF, you will be able to see these transitions in this mode. Therefore, this mode is mainly used for doing presentations to broadcast the PDF on a screen in front of the audiences
1. To enable Full Screen Mode, do one of the following:
- On the Menu Bar, click View menu > choose Reading Mode option

- On the keyboard, press CTRL + L (PC users) or Cmd + L (Mac users)
2. To move page to page in the Full Screen Mode, press the Right or Left arrow on the keyboard to move forward one page or go back one page
3. To exit the Full Screen Mode, press ESC key on the keyboard
Review Preferences
There are several important preference settings that you need to pay attention to and set up when you are using Acrobat X Pro
1. On the Menu Bar, click Edit menu > choose Preferences… option
2. In the Preferences dialog box, under Categories box, consider the following setting options:
- Identity is used for displaying your information whenever you save a PDF that you’ve created in Acrobat, or make comments

- Documents
- Under Open Settings section, the Documents in recently used list is used for increasing or decreasing the number of recently opened documents that are displayed on the recent document list (5 -10 documents can be displayed on the list)
- Under Save Settings section, select the Automatically save document changes to temporary file every: checkbox > adjust the time in the box if desired

- General
- Select Use single–key accelerators to access toolscheck box to be able to use a keyboard shortcut to quickly switch from one tool to the next tool.
- The problem with using this option is that the keyboard shortcuts are not evident in any tooltip anywhere. Therefore, you have to go to Online Help of the Acrobat X Pro to learn more about these shortcuts
- Select Create links from URLs check box to allow Acrobat to automatically create links from the URLs that it detects inside of a PDF
- Select/Deselect Do not show edit warning check box to control alerts that Acrobat might pop-up when you are working on your PDF document
- Select Use single–key accelerators to access toolscheck box to be able to use a keyboard shortcut to quickly switch from one tool to the next tool.

- TouchUp is used for controlling applications which will be launched whenever you need to edit an image or an object in your PDF document
- Under Image Editor section, click Choose Image Editor… button to point to a desired program for editing images
- Under Page/Object Editor section, click Choose Page/Object Editor… button to point to a desired program for editing paint graphics or drawing graphics such as vector graphics

- Units & Guide
- Under Units section, click the Page & Ruler Units: drop down arrow to change the default ruler unit if desired
- Under Layout Grid section, you can change the amount of spacing between the lines for layout grid
- Under Guides section, you can change the color of the ruler guides

Find Words and Phrases
1. Do one of the following:
- On the keyboard, press CTRL + F (PC users) or Cmd + F (Mac users)
- On the Menu Bar, click Edit menu > choose Find

2. In the small find field s pop-up, in the top left corner of the document, enter the keyword you want to find in the PDF document > press ENTER key on the keyboard

3. The text that you search for will be highlighted in the document
4. To find the next instance, press the ENTER key again
5. To find for a whole word, click the downward triangle next to the find field > select Whole Words Only option from the dropdown menu

Search a PDF and Work with the Search Panel
1. Do one of the following:
- In the Find box, click the downward triangle next to the find field > select Open Full Acrobat Search…option
- On the Menu Bar, click Edit menu > choose Advanced Search
- On the keyboard, press SHIFT + CTRL + F (PC users) or SHIFT + Cmd + F (Mac users)
2. In the Search Panel, do any of the following:
- Under Where would you like to search?section, select the document to search:
- In the current document
- All PDF Documents in> locate the location of the document to perform a batch search
- Make sure all the PDF documents are collected into the same folder first before performing a batch search
- Under What word or phrase you would like to search for? section, enter the keyword in the text box
- Check the box next to a desired search option
- At the bottom of the Search Panel, click Show More Options link to select more searching options

- Click Search button
3. Acrobat will go through the entire of the document and highlight all instances where it found words or phrases matching with you keywords. In the Search Panel, under Result box, Acrobat will displays the following information:
- Links to where it was found, as well as the words surrounding the keyword on either side of it. Therefore, you can see the results of your search in context which is very useful when you have many hits on a certain phrase
- When you move your cursor over to each of these links, the tooltip will display the page number associated with the link
