Split a PDF into Multiple Files

Adobe’s Split Tool allows you to split PDF into sections or singles pages and save each of those sections as a new file.

 

Select Split Document Options

1.  Open the file you want to split

2.  Go to Tools pane on the right > click on Pages > Click on Split Document


3.  In the Split Document dialog box, do the following:

  • Under Split document by section, select the desired option:
    • Number of pages-Select how many pages you want to be in each section.
      • For example, if you select Max pages of 1, the PDF will be divided into files of 1 page; or if you select a Max page of 4 it will be divided into sections of 4 pages.
    • File size- select what the biggest file size will be for each section
      • This is useful if you are splitting a long document to send to someone and you want the file size to remain fairly small to make the downloading process quicker

    • Top-level bookmarks- divides the PDF into sections based on bookmarks in the document
      • This is a good choice if you have a PDF that has different sections with bookmarks, then you can split the PDF based on the logical sections

 

 

Custoize Options for Output Documents

1.  In the Split Document dialog box, click on Output Options to select how the document will split

 

2.  In the Output Options dialog box, do any of the following:

  • Under Target Folder, select where you want the new PDFs to be saved
    • The Same Folder Selected ad Start- in the same folder as the original PDF
    • A Folder on My Computer- select a new folder to save the split PDFs in
  • Under File name,select one of the following:
    • Use bookmark names for file names- if you used top-level bookmarks to break the PDF into sections, this option will name those files based on the name of the bookmarks
    • Add label and number before original name­- this will place the new label and section number before the name of the original PDF. Example: Part1_TwoTreesHandbook
    • Add label and number after original name- this will place the new label and section number after the name of the original PDF. Example: TwoTreesHandbook_Part2
  • Select Use Label checkbox to use a label in the new file name, such as Part. Or you can type in your own label
  • Select Use separator between original name and label checkbox to add a separator, such as _, you can also type in your own separator
  • Make sure Do not overwrite existing files checkbox selected if you don’t want Adobe to overwrite already existing files named Part1_(DocumentName)

 

 

Apply Custom Options to Files

1.  In the Split Document dialog box, click on Apply to Multiple


2.  Click on the Add Files button > select to the desired option

 

3.  In the Add Files dialog box, select desired files > click on Add files


  • Click OK to allow Adobe split all files on the list in the same way

 


Finish Up the Split Process

1.  In the Split Document dialog box, click OK

 

2.  A window will open up letting you know how many section have been made, click OK


3. The files will be saved in the on your computer
