Create a List
Bulleted list, Numbered list or Multilevel list
Three types of lists can be created in Word 2010
- Bulleted list – a list of items that don’t need to appear in any particular order because they are peers, for example, a shopping list
- Numbered list – a list where there is a reason that one item might be first or second or third, for example, a list of driving directions
- Multi-level list – a list that has a major points and then minor points, for example, an outline


Create, define and remove a bulleted list
Create a bulleted list

Select the text
-
Go to Home tab > Paragraph group and do any of the following:

Click Bullets
-
To change the default bullet style or the last recently used bullet style, click the arrow next to Bullets > select other bullet styles in the Bullet Library

Define a new bullet
-
Go to Home tab > Paragraph group > click the arrow next to Bullets > choose Define New Bullet

In the Define New Bullet dialog box, do the following:

Under Bullet character, click on the desired bullet character button to create a new bullet style

Click OK

Remove the bullets in the bulleted list
-
Select the list
-
Go to Home tab > Paragraph group > click the Bullets

Create, define and remove a numbered list
Create a numbered list

Select the text
-
Go to Home tab > Paragraph group and do any of the following:

Click Numbering
-
To change the default numbering style or the last recently used numbering style, click the arrow next to Numbering > select other numbering styles in the Numbering Library

Define a new number list

Go to Home tab > Paragraph group > click the arrow next to Numbering > select Define New Number Format

In the Define New Number Format dialog box, do the following:

Under Number style, click on the desired number style in the drop down list

Click Font button to format the number style
-
Click OK button

Remove the number in the numbered list
-
Select the list
-
Go to Home tab > Paragraph group > click the Numbering list

Create a multi-level list
-
Select the text
-
Go to Home tab > Paragraph group > click Multilevel list
-
Select the desired multilevel list style from the List Library

Turn an item of the list into the sub-point
-
Choose the item of the list
-
Press TAB key
Define a multilevel list
-
Go to Home tab > Paragraph group > click Multilevel list > select Define New Multilevel List

In the Define new Multilevel list dialog box, do the following:

Under Click level to modify section, select the level to modify
-
Under Number format section, select desired new style
-
Click Font button to format the new style
-
Click OK button

Remove the numbering from a multi-level list
-
Select the list
-
Go to Home tab > Paragraph group > click Multilevel list > select None in the List Library

Quick tips
Add bullets or numbers quickly as typing the text
-
Do one of the following:
-
Type * (asterisk) to start a bulleted list or
-
Type 1. to start a numbered list
-
Press SPACEBAR or TAB key.
-
Type the text in the list.
-
Press ENTER to add the next list item
Finish the list
Do one of the following:
-
Press ENTER twice
-
Press BACKSPACE
Add the list to the prior list
When insert or delete an item in the numbered list, the list is automatically renumbered by Word
-
Point the cursor to the number itself (not the text)
-
Right-click on the number ð select Continue Numbering from the shortcut menu
-
The numbering style will continue into the text

Reset the list from the prior list
-
Point the cursor to the number itself (not the text)
-
Right-click on the number ð select Restart at 1 from the shortcut menu
-
The Word will stop one list and begin the next

Generate a multi-level list
-
When press TAB key on item on the list, Word will automatically generate a multi-level list because Word takes the tab mean that to go a lower level
-
To go back one level from the multi-level list, hold SHIFT + TAB key
