Check spelling and grammar errors

All Microsoft Office 2010 programs come with the ability to check the spelling and grammar. To use this feature, do any of the following: 

  • Go to Review tab > Proofing group > click on  Spelling & Grammar


  • Press F7 key on the keyboard

  • Click on the Proofing icon with the red X to correct errors one-by-one

  • Right-click the misspelled word to see suggested corrections 

  • Right-click the mistake to see more options


Set proofing and AutoCorrect options

  • Like many of the other features in Microsoft Word, Spelling and Grammar has options that control how it functions

  • AutoCorrect are things that Word does automatically to correct errors. There are five different types of AutoCorrect options:

    • AutoFormat

    • AutoCorrect

    • AutoFormat As You Type

    • Math AutoCorrect

    • Actions

Change the options for Spelling and Grammar

  • Go to File tab > Options > click Proofing
  • Under When correcting spelling and grammar in Word section, select appropriate spelling options to only make changes in Word program

Change, turn on/off AutoCorrect feature in Word

  • Go to File tab > Options > click Proofing
  • Under AutoCorrect options section,  click on AutoCorrect Options... button


Use Research, Thesaurus, Language and Translation tool

Research tool

Research tool allows you to look up a word to ensure it used correctly. Do the following:

  • Select a word

  • Go to Review tab > Proofing group > click on  Research

  • In the Research pane, click All Reference Books down arrow > select a specified reference book or website to do research if needed

Thesaurus tool

Thesaurus is a tool that emables you to find the synonym of words to avoid repeating a word many times throughout the document.

  • Select a word

  • Do one of the following:

    • Go to Review tab > Proofing group > click on Thesaurus

    • Right-click on a word > point to Synonyms > select an appropriate word to replace the repeating word

Language tool

Language tool helps Word to automatically determine that a paragraph is English or other different languages.

  • Go to Review tab > Language group > click on Language > click on Language References

  • Under Choose Editing Languages section, do the following:

    • Click on the [Add additional editing languages] dropdown menu

    • Select a desired dictionary

    • Click Add button to install the dictionary

Translate tool

Translate tool helps to translate words or paragraphs to different languages by using a bilingual dictionary or machine translation.

  • Select a word or paragraph need to translate

  • Do one of the following:

    • Go to Review tab > Language group > click on Translate > select Translate Selected Text

    • Right-click on a word or paragraph > click on Translate
