Create a Bulleted, Numbered, and Multi-level List
Three types of list can be created in Word 2011
1. Bulleted list
– a list of items that don’t need to appear in any particular order because they are peers, for example, a shopping list

2. Numbered list
– a list where there is a reason that one item might be first or second or third, for example, a list of driving directions

3. Multi-level list
– a list that has main points and then sub points, for example, an outline

Create, Define and Remove a Bulleted List
Create a Bulleted lLst
1. Select the text
- Go to Home tab > Paragraph group > click Bullets command
- To change the default bullet style or the last recently used bullet style, click the arrow next to Bullets, and then select other bullet styles in the Bullet Library

Define a New Bullet
1. Click the arrow next to Bullets, and click Define New Bullet
- In the Customize Bulleted Listdialog box, do the following:
- Under Bullet character, click on the desired bullet character button to create a new bullet style
- Click OK
Remove the Bullets in the Bulleted List
1. Select the list
2. Click the Bullets command again, the bullets will disappear

Create a Numbered List
1. Select the text
- Go to Home tab > Paragraph group > click Numbering command
- To change the default numbering style or the last recently used numbering style, click the arrow next to Numbering, and then select other numbering styles in the Numbering Library

Define a New Bullet
1. Click the arrow next to Numbering > click Define New Number Format
- In the Customize Numbered Listdialog box, do the following:
- Under Number style, click on the desired number style in the drop down list
- To format the number style, click Font
- Click OK

Remove the Numbers in the Numbered List
1. Select the list
2. Click the Numbering command again, the numbers will disappear

Create a multi-level list
1. Select the text
- Go to Home tab > Paragraph group > click Multilevel list command
- Select the desired multilevel list style from the List Library

Turn an Item of the List Into a Sub-point
1. Choose the item
2. Press TAB key
Define a Multilevel List
1. Click the arrow next to Multilevel list
2. Click Define New Multilevel List

3. In the Customize Outline Numbered list dialog box, do the following:

- Select the level to modify from Level menu list

- Under Number format, select desired new style

- To format the new style, click Font

- Click OK
Remove the Numbering From a Multi-level List
1. Click the arrow next to Multilevel list command
2. Select None in the List Library
Create a List as You are Typing the Text
1. Type * (asterisk) to start a bulleted list or 1. to start a numbered list, and then press SPACEBAR or the TAB key.
2. Type the text in the list.
3. Press RETURN to add the next list item. Word automatically inserts the next bullet or number.
Finish the list
1. Press RETURN twice
2. Press BACKSPACE
Add the List to the Prior List
1. Point the cursor to the number itself (not the text)
- Right-click on the number
- Click Continue Numbering
- The numbering style will continue into the text
Separate a List from the Prior List
1. Point the cursor to the number itself (not the text)
- Right-click on the number
- Click Restart Numbering from the menu
- Word will stop one list and begin the next

Quick tips for Using the List
- When inserting or deleting an item in the numbered list, the list is automatically renumbered by Word
- When TAB key is pressed while the insertion point is at the beginning of a bullet, Word will automatically generate a multi-level list because Word takes the tab mean that to go a lower level. To go back one level from the multi-level list, hold SHIFT + TAB key
