Undergraduate/Transfer Students
Undergraduate Students who are starting out or transferring to MSU Denver must:
- Select and declare a major in an approved academic discipline;
- Complete the General Studies sequence as required of the licensure or major program;
- Apply to the Teacher Licensure Program a semester before beginning Teacher Licensure coursework;
- Complete the major course sequence and the Teacher Licensure course sequence which includes Student Teaching.
General Studies Requirements:
There are specific General Studies requirements for those students seeking Early Childhood, Elementary, Secondary, K-12 or Special Education licensure that are listed on the program plan and advising sheets. It is imperative for teacher candidates to consult with their education advisor so that these requirements are explained. For example, to fulfill the General Studies requirement in Mathematics, students planning to apply to the teacher licensure programs must take MTH 1610 – Integrated Mathematics I. Where to begin:
Transfer Students should be sure to have copies of all official transcripts sent to MSU Denver as soon as they submit an application to the university. Once your transcripts have been evaluated, you will receive a Transfer Evaluation showing which classes transferred in and what their equivalents are, if any. Degree-seeking freshmen who are starting out at MSU Denver will need to meet with the General Academic Advisor for Teacher Education. Appointments can be scheduled by calling (303) 556-6228, or by stopping in our office in West Classroom Room 136.
Transfer Services can also do a Preliminary Transcript Evaluation for you with your unofficial transcripts if you’d like to get an idea of what should transfer in to MSU Denver before you actually submit your application to the university.
Once you have your transfer evaluation, your next step will be to meet with some advisors. If you have any General Studies requirements remaining (or if you are not sure), you should schedule an appointment with our General Academic Advisor for Teacher Education. Appointments can be scheduled by calling (303) 556-6228, or by stopping in our office. Please bring all of your transcripts and the appropriate program plan to your appointment.
Once your General Studies are mapped out, the next step is to see an advisor in your major department. Each major that is approved for Teacher Licensure has specific faculty members designated to advise Teacher Licensure students for their major. Please see the following guide to ensure you are meeting with the appropriate advisors in the major departments across the university. Please note: Special Education majors will meet with Special Education advisors in the Teacher Education Department.

Degree-seeking students will be ready to begin taking Teacher Licensure/Education Department courses once they have completed approximately 60-70% of their major (this does not include Special Education majors) and all of their General Studies. Students may consult with an advisor in the Education Department whenever they are ready. Advising in the Teacher Education Department should occur before any Teacher Education classes are added to your schedule.
