GPA Calculation for Student Teaching

To be accepted into Student Teaching toward the end of your program, you must have a GPA of 2.75 or higher in the specific courses required for licensure in your program.

The following worksheets will indicate which courses are required for each major/licensure combination as well as for each post-baccalaureate program. The appropriate worksheet should be completed with your Teacher Education advisor. Upon completion, your advisor will print and sign the worksheet as part of your application to Student Teaching.

Keep in mind that you can use this worksheet to track your GPA as you work your way through the program, and it is also a reminder of which courses must be passed with a grade of "C" or better. If you do decide to track your progress as you go, you can email the document to your advisor prior to your advising appointment and they can check that your grades are entered properly. You should bring copies of your college or university transcripts to your advising appointment if any of your required courses were taken at another institution.

Instructions for GPA Worksheets

Locate the worksheet for the licensure program you are admitted to. Click the file to download it to your computer (the files are in Microsoft Excel 2003). For each class on the worksheet, enter the number of credits for the class and the letter grade in the appropriate boxes. Your GPA will automatically calculate at the bottom of the worksheet. You must have the credits and grade entered for each class you have completed in order for the form to calculate properly. If any of the classes on your worksheet are currently in progress, leave the credit and grade BLANK for those classes (do not write in "IP" or anything else in those spaces, it will cause an error in the calculation).

If the classes on the worksheet do not match up with the requirements for your program (this can happen with students who are completing a program under an older catalog), contact Brian Gunther in the Teacher Application Center for assistance.

Also, please remember that this is not a substitute for your program plan. The courses on these worksheets are only the courses that count toward your GPA. There may be additional courses required for your major or general studies, and courses required for licensure that are graded in a way that does not factor into your GPA.

+/- Grades should be calculated as whole letter grades. For example, a transferred class with a grade of "B-" or a grade of "B+" should be entered as a grade of "B" on your GPA calculation worksheet. If you transferred classes in for any of the requirements on your worksheet, you will need to record the grade you received in the class when you took it, do not enter "T" for any courses.
