Teaching with Primary Sources Topic Inquiry

This course provides an opportunity for educators to work directly with a key scholar around a specific topic to experience and develop an historical inquiry using the steps of inquiry: connect, wonder, investigate, construct, express, and reflect.  By exploring the depth of Library of Congress primary source documents, letters, memoirs, pictures, videos and audio participants will discover facts and clues to help develop sound inquiry-based instructional activities.

Prerequisite: None
Offered: Once each semester (fall, spring, summer)
Delivery Options: Face-to-face or online
Groups Option: Onsite for schools or districts with at least 10 participants

Hours: 15 hours
Cost: Free for general professional development or possible licensing renewal credit
Graduate Credit: Optional (1 hour), paid at per credit-hour rate, awarded through other Colorado universities

Objectives:
Upon completion participants should be able to:

  • Explore a topic using primary and secondary sources
  • Examine the relationship between primary sources and inquiry-based learning
  • Develop topic-specific materials for standards-based classroom instruction

Upon completion of Inquiry and 21st Century Learning, you earn:

  • An online account funded with up to $150 for redeeming classroom primary source material
  • Topic Inquiry certificate of completion
  • One graduate credit (optional)
