South Suburban Parks and Recreation
Trails and Tree II – Paths to the Future
South Platte River Community Forest Restoration and Enhancement
Ages 10+
Volunteers are needed to complete landscaping restoration alongside the newly completed and dedicated East Bank Greenway Trail. In an effort toward finishing the project, volunteers will plant 200 site-appropriate trees and install an automated, underground drip irrigation system to ensure establishment and vigorous growth of this new riverside forest. These new trees will provide wildlife habitat, screen parking lots from the river and trail corridor, capture air and water contaminants from adjacent properties while enhancing the beauty of the area and the experience for trail and river users.
Tree planting volunteers need to assist with lifting and moving approximately 50 – 75 pound root balls and containers. Volunteers will dig in rocky soils; pull tarps full of wood chip mulch and install wildlife protection wiring around the newly planted trees. They will also pick up trash and debris, collect and pile rocks and concrete chunks for later disposal.
Volunteers will be working along the East Bank Greenway Trail off of the South Platte River Corridor in Littleton and Englewood. Volunteers have the option to Check-In at the Auraria Campus at 7:00 a.m. and will be bussed to their designated area. Busses will depart at 7:30 a.m. Sharp. OR volunteers may drive on their own and meet near south Union on Wyandot Street before 8:00 a.m. to check-in.
