  Accelerated Nursing Option

Metropolitan State College of Denver ~ Department of Nursing
Administration Building ~ Room 220 ~ 303.556.4391

Metropolitan State College of Denver's Accelerated Nursing Option (ACNO) is a 17 month, semester based program. It is designed to give students who have a non-nursing baccalaureate degree a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Graduates are eligible to apply to take the national professional nurse licensing exam (NCLEX-RN).

Curriculum
The curriculum for the ACNO is extremely demanding and completed in 17 months. Students are admitted in January and complete the nursing curriculum in four consecutive semesters, including summer. Students are required to attend classes, complete laboratory experiences and fulfill clinical requirements. Students must be available for day, evening, and night assignments seven days a week.

Program Cost
The estimated cost of the ACNO is approximately $30,000, which includes tuition, Metro student fees, health insurance, uniforms and some books and supplies. Please note that tuition and fees are subject to change without notice. This is a cash funded program and receives no state funding; therefore the cost is the same for in-state and out-of-state students.

Financial Aid / Scholarships
Scholarships, living stipends and loan forgiveness programs may be available to help students with their educational expenses. Students may apply for scholarships after they have been accepted into the ACNO through the Metro State Financial Aid Office.

Working While in the Program
Employment while completing this degree program is strongly discouraged due to the intense, rigorous schedule and the need to allow flexibility for required classroom, skills lab and clinical placements.

Application Eligibility
To be eligible to apply to the Accelerated Nursing Option students must:

  • have completed a non-nursing baccalaureate degree in any field,
  • have completed all pre-requisites courses,
  • have a minimum 2.5 GPA in all pre-requisites courses.

Applications that are submitted with one or more of the above criteria missing will be considered incomplete and will not be reviewed. It is the applicant’s responsibility to ensure that all required documentation is submitted.

Admission Process
A competitive selection process is completed for each group of students who apply to the Accelerated Nursing Option once a year. The ACNO does not maintain an ongoing waitlist. A Cohort of 36 students is selected based on the applicants' education, pre-requisite GPA, work experience, certifications, volunteer experience, honors, resume, and personal essay. Applicants must also successfully pass a criminal background check and drug screen.

In addition to the academic requirements, MSCD Department of Nursing requires other information including immunization records and CPR certification. Candidates must be able to meet the rigorous physical, mental, emotional and academic standards required to become a professional nurse. This process does not unlawfully discriminate on the basis of age, race, religion, creed, gender, national origin, disability or veteran status.

Multicultural Course
To be awarded a bachelor’s degree from Metropolitan State College of Denver all students are required to complete a 3-credit hour Multicultural course. This course may be transferred in or taken at Metro State. The Metro State graduation requirement for a 3-credit hour multicultural course must be approved by Transfer Services (303-556-3774). Due to the rigors of the ANCO, it is recommended that the Multicultural course requirement be completed before applying to the ANCO or be taken in the last semester of the nursing curriculum. Students will not be awarded their bachelor’s degree from Metro State until this requirement is met.

For multicultural course requirements and guidelines please visit the www.mscd.edu homepage under Multicultural Graduation Requirements or contact the Office of Transfer Services @ 303.556.3774 for verification of transferring in this course.
