Alumni Spotlight: John Cochran and Carlos Fresquez
Many alumni graduate from Metro State and later return to the school as employees. Below are two very different examples of how high quality Metro State students often become high quality Metro State faculty.

John Cochran, Dean of School of Business (‘78)

Metro State Provost Rodolfo Rocha announced recently that John Cochran had been named Dean of the School of Business. “John is an example of the high quality of student that Metro State produces,” Rocha said of Cochran, who is a 1978 economics graduate of Metro State. “He’s a visionary and his understanding of the mission and the role that Metro State plays will help us move closer to the College’s vision.” Cochran came to Metro State in 1981 to teach economics after graduating from CU-Boulder with a Ph.D. in the discipline. He has been with the College ever since, rising to full professor and chair of the Economics Department. In 2005, he received the Distinguished Service Award for administrators. Read more . . .

Carlos Fresquez, Artist and Assistant Art Professor (‘80)

A 1980 graduate of Metro State, Carlos Fresquez (who earned his M.F.A from the University of Colorado), returned to the College in 1989 to fill in for a painting professor who was recovering from back surgery. “I really enjoyed it. I had no idea of a teaching style or anything,” Fresquez says, “so I just did the class, and they loved what I was doing.” He ended up teaching part time at Metro State for 11 years before taking an instructorship at the University of Colorado at Denver and Health Sciences Center for four years. Metro State asked him back when a full-time position opened up. Read more . . .
