Scholarships are Available for Qualified Students

Listed below are scholarships available to Journalism students at Metropolitan State College of Denver. Contact the MSCD Journalism office at (303) 556-3485 for more information about each scholarship.

  • The Gene Amole Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a full time junior or senior at Metropolitan State College with a declared journalism major in the News & Editorial emphasis and who demonstrates outstanding motivation, talent & integrity, and a 3.0 or better GPA. Award amount is one year, up to $5,400, and includes full tuition and fees for up to 15 credit hours each for Fall and Spring semesters, and a books and supplies allowance of $350 per semester.   • The Christopher Lee Anderson Memorial Endowed Scholarship is awarded to a full time Junior or Senior college student with a declared major in print Journalism, with a preference for news/editorial emphasis. Must maintain a minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA at Metropolitan State College of Denver. Preference will be made for a highly motivated, outstanding student. To apply, submit a cover letter, and 3 samples of your work to the committee. Students may reapply annually for continuation of the award if the above criteria are met. Deadline scholarship applications due March 1st.
  • The Greg Lopez Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a major or minor in journalism or a related field leading to qualifications for a position at a professional newspaper. You must have completed 60 hours and have a 3.0 GPA or better. Applicants should submit three writing samples, an autobiography of no more than 500 words, and a profile of a person. Deadline scholarship applications due March 1st.
  • The Greg Pearson Memorial Scholarship. Two scholarships are awarded to juniors or seniors with at least a 2.75 GPA and majors in journalism. You must summit an essay about why you want to pursue a career in journalism and what you plan to do after graduation, along with two writing samples and a resume. Deadline scholarship applications due March 1st.
  • The Sheldon Peterson Award of $1,500 will be given to a sophomore or junior from Colorado, majoring in journalism with an emphasis in broadcast journalism. Your application must include a resume, and an essay of 500 words or less illustrating your writing abilities and indicating your plans for a career in broadcast journalism. Include the names, titles, and phone numbers of two references, preferably journalism instructors or professional journalists, and at least one tape of an audio or video story broadcast by a school or a professional media outlet. Deadline scholarship applications due March 1st.
  • The Helen Verba Award. Two $1,500 scholarships awarded to sophomores or juniors from Colorado, majoring in journalism with an emphasis in print journalism. Applications must include a resume and an essay of no more than 500 words illustrating your writing abilities and indicating your plans for a career in journalism. Include as well the names, titles, and phone numbers of two references, preferably journalism instructors or professional journalists, and at least one clip of a story/article published in a school or professional publication. Deadline scholarship applications due March 1st.
  • The Rocky Mountain News Scholarship, for incoming students with an interest in the field of journalism, is a four year scholarship with paid summer internship. You will need to submit with your application high school transcript, and three writing samples, preferably journalistic work. Deadline scholarship applications due March 1st.
  • The Colorado Scholars Program presents awards to degree-seeking students who are US citizens or eligible non-citizens, residents of Colorado, and seeking their first bachelor's degree with a GPA of at least 3.0. Additional department requirements may apply. Deadline scholarship applications due March 1st.

Applicants for scholarships in Journalism at MSCD should complete the Metropolitan State College of Denver Scholarship Application and submit the completed form to the MSCD Scholarship Office by March 1st (see instructions on application). In addition, please complete and submit the Journalism Scholarship Information Form to MSCD's Journalism office, or fax to (303) 556-3013.
