What Does the Speech, Language, Hearing Sciences Emphasis Offer?

Career Options

An emphasis in Speech, Language, Hearing Sciences provides a sound background for students pursuing careers in education, health care, and vocational rehabilitation. Graduates in Speech, Language, Hearing Sciences Option A will have the prerequisite coursework to pursue a master's degree in speech-language pathology or a doctorate in audiology, which opens the door to careers in schools, community clinics, hospitals, rehabilitation centers, and private practice. Students who select Option B gain additional practicum experience working with children who have speech, language, and literacy needs in early childhood and elementary school settings. This emphasis is approved for students seeking early childhood and elementary licensure. The Speech-Language Pathology Assistant Certificate prepares students to obtain the Colorado Department of Education Authorization for Speech-Language Pathology Assistants.

Elective Speech Communication courses selected beyond the core should be determined in consultation with an advisor and approved by the Department of Speech Communication. Contact the MSCD Communication Arts & Sciences office for more information.

Independent study, topic courses, and experiential education courses such as practicums and internships may be taken in several program areas.

SPE 1010 Public Speaking is a prerequisite to THE 3200, SPE 2530, SPE 2890, and SPE 3740. BIO 1080 and BIO 1090 (General Introduction to Biology and Lab) are prerequisites for BIO 2310. These courses are required for the major and may be used to fulfill Level II General Studies requirements.

Students seeking a Speech, Language, Hearing Sciences minor (below) are required to take a minimum of 21 semester hours, 9 of which must be upper division. Click the link to see requirements for the Speech Communication minor.

The new Digital Media Minor offers courses selected from the departments of Art, Communication Arts & Sciences, and Technical Communications. Four concentrations in this minor are offered: Still Media, Motion Media, Interactive Media, and Content Design.
