The meeting
started at 2:33 PM. During
introductions and welcoming of Council members, Dr. Germann setup equipment to
demonstrate the VR of Winter Park and news clips. Before the update on the Pepsi Center research, Dr. Broida a
provided a brief recap of the project to bring all up-to-date, starting with
the 20th StreetGym, which is now posted on the Web Parks and Recreation Web
site. Currently, Pepsi Center research
is being conducted with Craig Hospital newly disabled, still in-patient
groups. There are four groups for the
research: a control group; an unassisted VR only group; a recreation
therapist-assisted VR group; and a traditional leisure education without VR
group. For this research a
physiological measure of anxiety was added; in the Gym research, it could not
be determined whether heart rates were due to exertion or anxiety. In the Pepsi
Center, salivary cortisol is collected through small cotton cords and sent for
analysis in Pennsylvania. An April date
is now expected for completion of data.
Dr. Broida stated
that the project has gotten good media coverage, and a clip from Fox of Lonnie
at the 20th Street Gym was shown.
Krzysztoph Walder
presented the update on the National Sports Center for the Disabled. A
community-based population of subjects who are new skiers is being used. Beth will be working with subjects, and six
agencies are working with the project to sponsor skiers to NSCD. There will be a control group was no VR, an
automatically guided tour on the VR, and VR with a therapist. Research will began in mid-November and be
finished in January 2002. After being
shown features of the completed VR, attendees broke up into groups to explore
the NSCD site on their own and provide any feedback, as well as get
refreshments. The meeting was
reconvened at 4:05 PM.
The meeting ended
with presenting the date and format of the next meeting: Tuesday Aug. 13, 2000,
1:30 to 5 PM. This will also be a
symposium to share the technology and research results, inviting people from
allied health fields among others and will be held at the Tivoli building, room
320. After reviewing the campus
Disability Day schedule, the meeting was adjourned.
