PROGRAM INFORMATION
The Center for Mathematics, Science and Environmental Education at Metropolitan State College of Denver would like to share the responsibility of providing scientific literacy to all our youth. Volunteers of the Visiting Scientist program can bring their first-hand hands-on experiences to the classroom to widen the students’ horizons and provide important role models for them. Whether they are in the classroom for one lecture or throughout the teaching of a whole unit, these volunteers share their ideas and talents in an exciting way.
They are people, like you, often residing in the same local community of the participation school. Simply put, they are people who use or have used mathematics, science, or technology in their work or avocation. They can be technicians, engineers, medical professionals, fire and police personnel, science hobbyists, agricultural professions, educators and more.
You do not have to be a “professional” to participate in this program. If you have a science or technical hobby you can share this knowledge with a school. A school presentation usually takes approximately 45 minutes to one hour. There are no meetings and no fees.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
* Every fall, CMSEE distributes to all area schools and other organizations materials and request forms for teachers or leaders who may be interested in our Visiting Scientist Program.
* Teachers who are interested mail or fax the request form to the CMSEE office. A Visiting Scientist staff member searches the database to find the person who best fits the request.
* The teacher is put into contact with the volunteer via fax, mail or e-mail, and together they plan the details of their activity with the students.
* The VSP staff follows up each of these events so that the creativity and achievements of these teacher-scientist partnerships can be recognized and shared with other schools and teachers.
* Many companies participating in our program allow paid time off for their employees to visit the schools.
