CHEMISTRY DAY

APRIL 13, 2007

The Department of Chemistry at Metropolitan State College of Denver would like to invite you and your High School students to participate in Chemistry Day to be held on April 13, 2007.  The Metropolitan State Chemistry Department hopes this competition will stimulate interest in chemistry and foster interaction among area high schools.

Metropolitan State College of Denver is the largest public, strictly undergraduate four- year urban college in the United States.  Since its creation in 1965, the college has contributed to the vitality of downtown Denver and has changed the face of learning in the metropolitan area with its phenomenal growth to approximately 18,200 students.

Chemistry Day will consist of a competition between teams from local high schools in a Chemistry Bowl and individual competitions involving chemistry knowledge, laboratory techniques, and logical thinking.  In addition, students will be able to interact with college chemistry faculty & chemistry undergraduates.

Students may participate in any or all of the four individual contests as well as the team chemistry bowl.  In addition, students will be able to participate individually in a "Nomenclature Bingo" contest for individual prizes and points for your school.  Bingo cards with formulas of compounds will need to be matched with the names of compounds the caller will announce (and vice versa).  In addition to the token individual prize, winning students will be awarded 5 pts for their school (up to a maximum of 50 points per school).  All contests will be conducted simultaneously with the Chemistry Bowl with time available for students to participate in both types of activities.

Awards will be presented to the top five finishers in each major contest as well as the top five winners in the Chemistry Bowl.  An overall grand prize of a one-year scholarship for Metropolitan State College of Denver will be awarded to the School that accumulates the most points in all of the competitions.

Lunch will be provided free of charge between 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.  Registration will take place between 7:30 and 8:00 a.m.  The contests will start promptly at 8:00 a.m.

If you and your students are interested in participating in the activities, please fill out the entry form and return it to the Department of Chemistry at Metropolitan State College of Denver by March 19, 2007.  Maps of the campus and parking information will be mailed to you when your entry form is received.  For additional information and questions, contact the Chemistry Department at (303) 556-2610.  We look forward to seeing you on Chemistry Day.
