Japanese design exhibit opens June 30 at CVA
June 29, 2005

The AIBO Entertainment Robot is one of the designs featured in Japanese Design Today 100 at the Center for Visual Art.

Japanese Design Today 100, a selection of approximately 100 of the finest examples of Japanese design created between the 1990s and today, opens Thursday, June 30, at Metro State’s Center for Visual Art, with a public reception from 7-9 p.m.

The exhibition focuses on products used in everyday life. The designs of these household products give a vivid picture of the hopes and dreams of the Japanese designers and corporations who create them. Thirteen objects of modern design are included from the early postwar years to show the origin of today’s design.

Among the designs are the Akari Lamp by Isamu Noguchi, the Butterfly Stool by Sori Yanagi, A-POC clothing by Issey Miyake, Silent Violin by Masaharu Ohno and the AIBO Entertainment Robot by Hajime Sorayama.

The exhibition, which runs through Aug. 27, was organized by the Japan Foundation and is sponsored by the Japanese Consulate, the Asian Art Coordinating Council and Vesta Dipping Grill.

The Center for Visual Art is located at 1734 Wazee Street. Summer hours are Tuesday-Saturday: noon-5 p.m. Admission is free. For more information go to www.mscd.edu/news/cva/.
