Administrators seek to standardize compensation system
May 7, 2008

The Administrative Salary Review Committee, chaired by Human Resource Executive Director Judith Zewe, presented recommendations on administrative salary philosophy and practices to the Council of Administrators on Monday. The committee has been meeting since earlier this year to develop a policy regarding compensation for administrative employees and guidelines for salary at initial hire and the overall compensation philosophy.

According to the committee’s initial policy recommendations, the ideal compensation system would include:

• Balancing the need to be both externally competitive and internally equitable while
working within the availability of institutional and department resources
• Recognizing the value of current employees by maintaining internal equity with comparable duties and responsibilities
• Attracting highly skilled and competent employees and retaining them by providing opportunities for learning growth, and career development.

“A lot of this is practiced, but it needs to be written down in detail,” says Tara Tull, committee member and chair of the Council of Administrators. “One of the reasons we need to address this issue now is because there’s been a lot of new hires lately.”

The committee’s initial recommendations address the use of CUPA (College and University Professional Association-HR), job advertisement guidelines, initial salary determination, salary determination upon hire and exceptions to normal starting salary practices. For existing administrators, the committee is also exploring salary determination in interim positions, faculty moving to administrative positions and reclassification requests.

The Administrative Salary Review Committee will be presenting the salary recommendations to the vice presidents and to the President’s Cabinet within the next few weeks.

The next phase of work for the committee is to discuss equity issues and how to support current employees.

Committee members:
Charles Batey, associate director of equal opportunity
Diane Harrison Miller, director of student media
Yvonne Flood, assistant vice president of information technology
Sandy Jones, Metro State human resources retiree/consultant
Natalie Lutes, vice president for administration and finance
Elena Sandoval-Lucero, director of admissions and outreach
Tara Tull, associate director of women’s studies and services
Judith Zewe, executive director of human resources
