The article “President’s Cabinet approves revised background check policy” published in the Oct. 1 This Week @Metro has raised questions about whether current employees are subject to background checks.
To clarify: Current employees who have not applied for a new position with the College or whose responsibilities or duties have not changed are not
subject to a background check. They are, however, required to disclose
to Metro State’s executive director of human resources any criminal
conviction (guilty verdict, guilty plea, or no-contest plea) within
five business days of that conviction. Disclosure of a criminal
conviction will necessitate that the employee sign the Background Check
Disclosure and Authorization Form, allowing the college to conduct
a one-time background check.
To review: Current employees who have applied for a new position or whose responsibilities or duties have changed are
subject to a background check, unless they have had a background check
within the past three years. However, if the job change includes access
to the College’ financial/major resources or driving a motor vehicle, a
financial history record or motor vehicle record background check will
be required regardless of the date of the last background check.
