Metro State names new head baseball coach

Jul 25, 2011

Baseball Head Coach Jerrid Oates
Director of Athletics Joan McDermott announced Jerrid Oates (pronounced "OAT-iss") as the new head coach of the Roadrunner baseball team on Friday, July 22.

Oates replaces interim head coach Tom Carcione, who oversaw the program for two years. Oates, who joins Metro State after spending four seasons as the head coach at Colorado School of Mines (CSM), will be the 10th coach in the team’s 44-year history.

"Jerrid has all of the qualities to be a successful coach at Metro," McDermott said. "In talking with people familiar with him, everyone emphasized that he is an extremely hard worker and very passionate about baseball.”

"I’m excited for this opportunity," Oates said. "Metro State has great tradition and has proven to be a winner across the board and I’m excited for the chance to be a part of that and contributing to the success."

Oates was named Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) Co-Coach of the Year in 2008, his first year as the head coach. During his four years at CSM, his players earned 20 all-conference selections and 26 academic all-conference awards. Following the 2010 season, Oates had two players sign contracts with Major League Baseball teams.

Before his time at CSM, Oates served as graduate assistant at Fort Hays State University (FHSU) when the Tigers were members of the RMAC. He helped lead the university to the NCAA II Tournament, along with RMAC regular season and tournament championships. In 2003, the Tigers won the NCAA Division II batting title.

As a student-athlete, Oates played four seasons at Nebraska Wesleyan University as a catcher, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in sports management in 2001. He also holds a master’s in health and human performance from FHSU.

"I am very familiar with the program at Metro," Oates says. "I’ve been in the RMAC my whole coaching career from Fort Hays to Mines and now Metro. I know [Metro State] lost a lot of players to graduation this past year and I look forward to meeting all of the new guys and the returners. I can’t wait to get acclimated with everyone and have them do the same with me."
