There are two ways you can get involved with Metro
State’s Center for Visual Art in the coming weeks: take in the new
exhibition on Native American legacies in contemporary art, and vote
for the CVA as Denver’s best gallery in an online poll.
“Currents: Native American Forces in Contemporary Art” presents the
work of seven contemporary artists engaging in a cross-cultural
dialogue regarding Native American legacies in the context of
contemporary art.
The seven artists – Norman Akers, Nicholas Galanin, Jeffrey Gibson,
Jaune Quick-To-See Smith, Marie Watt, Will Wilson and Melanie Yazzie –
challenge the romantic notion of a Native American style of art frozen
in the past.
Curated by Cecily Cullen, CVA’s assistant director/curator,
“Currents” will be on display at the gallery from Aug. 27 – Nov. 7,
with an opening reception on Thursday, Aug. 27, from 6-9 p.m. featuring
a talk by artist Melanie Yazzie at 7 p.m.
The Center for Visual Art is located at 1734 Wazee Street. For more information, go to http://www.metrostatecva.org/.
CVA seeks your vote as “best gallery in Denver”
The CVA is
registered as a candidate gallery on The Best of Denver’s 7 A-List, an
online promotional contest and city guide sponsored by KMGH TV Channel
7 that allows consumers to vote for their favorite local businesses.
Contest winners are determined by popular vote, and voting ends Sept.
18.
