First Lady Jeannie Ritter featured speaker at Oct. 1 Disability Awareness Festival

The third annual Disability Awareness Festivalwill be held on campus this Wednesday, Oct. 1, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Tivoli Commons.

Titled “Bringing Abilities to Light,” the festival promotes greater awareness of and respect for individuals with disabilities. It will feature numerous speakers, bands, free food (including cotton candy) and close to 40 vendors representing groups and organizations that advocate for people with disabilities.

Colorado’s First Lady Jeannie Ritter, keynote speaker, will give remarks at 12:30 p.m.

The festival is the collaborative effort of Metro State’s Access Center, UCD’s Office of Disability Resources and Services, CCD’s Center for Persons with Disabilities and the Mental Health Center of Denver.

Art-Ability and other related events
The Disability Awareness Festival is part of a series of disability-related events being held on campus throughout the month of October.

One of these is Auraria Art-Ability, an exhibition of art by Auraria students, faculty and staff living with disabilities, which will be shown throughout October in the Tivoli Multicultural Lounge and the Auraria Library. An artist’s reception is being held Thursday, Oct. 2, from 2-4 p.m. in the Tivoli and 4-6 p.m. in the library. (To read more, go to Art-ability exhibition promotes greater understanding.)

Other events include the following:

• Chanda Plan Healing Expo, Oct. 3-4, at the Campus Recreation Center. A Silent Auction will be held Oct. 3 from 6-9:30 p.m., and yoga teacher training will be provided from 9 a.m. to noon on Oct. 4, with an adaptive yoga class for individuals with disabilities from 12:30-2 p.m. on Oct. 4.
• White Cane Day, Oct. 15, will offer participants a simulated activity to better understand what it’s like to be vision-impaired. Call 303-556-3300 for more information.
• Mental Health Center of Denver 2Succeed Open House, Oct. 15 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
• Supportive Transition Education Program for High School Juniors and Seniors with Disabilities, Oct. 17.
• Open houses of the three on-campus institutions’ disability resource centers: UCD on Oct. 16 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., CCD on Oct. 24 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and Metro State on Oct. 29 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
